Racing! John Shear will be honored today, and deservedly so

Share

Hello, my name is Eric Sondheimer and I’m pinch-hitting for John Cherwa. Welcome back to our horse racing newsletter. There’s racing on Monday at Santa Anita on Martin Luther King. Jr. Day.

That means $1 hot dogs, $1 beer and $1 sodas. And you get to participate and salute a real hero between the fourth and fifth races.

John Shear, the paddock captain who turns 97 on Wednesday, will be honored in the winner’s circle. He first came out to Santa Anita in 1955. He was raised in an orphanage in England, went to work at 14, served in World War II and loves horses and people. He’s been part of the Santa Anita environment for decade upon decade.

In 2011, when he was 90, he received national attention. A horse got loose in the paddock, and Shear tossed a 6-year-old girl out of the way. He got trampled, resulting in pelvic fractures, a fractured cheekbone and gashes above his eye and down his arm. Here’s the wonderful Bill Plaschke story from 2011.

He healed and continues to move better than some 50-year-olds. He’s always around the paddock opening and closing walkways when the horses arrive for races. He loves to talk to people.

“I’ve always enjoyed life,” he said of his longevity. “I like people. I like working. I’m not a TV watcher.”

He says he doesn’t eat red meat, doesn’t eat fried foods, avoids sugar and does 30 push-ups every morning. He has no plans to retire any time soon. He has been married to his wife, Diane, since 1964. He also loves horses.

“As soon as I stepped foot into the stable area I said, ‘Lord, this is where I’m going to be,’ ” he said.

Here’s the link to the interview I did with Shear on Saturday.

Tuning up

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is gearing up West Coast to run in the $16 million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 27 at Gulfstream Park. West Coast tuned up in a swift 1:12 six-furlong workout on Sunday at Santa Anita. Drayden Van Dyke was aboard before taking the afternoon off after feeling ill.

Santa Anita review

Jockey Tyler Baze swept the two $75,000 feature races. Trainer John Sadler saddled Selcourt to her first stakes victory in the Kalookan Queen Stakes at 6 ½ furlongs for fillies and mares. The 4-year-old daughter of Tiz Wonderful led wire to wire in a 7 ½-length romp under Baze.

Baze used the same strategy in the 1 1/2-mile Astra Stakes on the turf, guiding the Italian import Plein Air to a wire to wire victory.

Plein Air, making her U.S. debut, is trained by Baffert, who’s not known for winning turf races.

“Bob told me that she pretty much just went to the lead and galloped around there in her other races so he said to send her out there a little bit,” Baze said. “She didn’t break that well but as soon as I sent her and she hit the lead, her ears went up. In this kind of race it’s just a matter of getting them to breathe and just settle.”

Santa Anita preview

There is a special Martin Luther King Jr. card with nine races and it’s dollar day, so there will be a big crowd. The highlight is the Grade 3 $100,000 Megahertz Stakes for older fillies and mares over a mile on the grass.

Insta Erma is the 2-1 morning-line favorite. She is one for one over the Santa Anita turf having won the Swingtime Stakes in October. She finished third in the Grade 1 Matriarch at Del Mar. This will be her fourth race out west since joining the barn of Richard Baltas.

Thundering Sky is the second pick at 3-1. She was 10th in the Matriarch after a strong second in the Goldikova, both at Del Mar.

There are four turf races on the card, the first, fifth, seventh and ninth.

Big races preview

A look at graded stakes or races worth $100,000 or more on Monday.

10:20 Aqueduct: $100,000 Damon Runyon Stakes, 3-year-olds, 1 mile. Favorite: Empire Line (2-1)

12:50 Aqueduct: $100,000 Interborough Stakes, fillies and mares 4 and up, 7 furlongs. Favorite: Come Dancing (3-1)

2:38 Oaklawn: $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes, 3-year-olds, 1 mile. Favorite: Mourinho (3-2)

3:38 Santa Anita: Grade 3 $100,000 Megahertz Stakes, fillies and mares 4 and up, 1 mile on the turf. Favorite: Insta Erma (2-1)

Bob Ike’s SA pick of the day

NINTH RACE No. 6 Red Shelby (7-2)

Lukewarm favorite from the Peter Miller barn goes route-to-sprint in one of my favorite angles when playing the downhill turf course. She showed speed under pressure going long, then tired through the final 100 yards in a race she figured to need. All set for her best now on the cutback in distance.

Sunday Result: Atonarun finished a distant third in the 6th race.
