Racing! Looking back at the Pegasus World Cup

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we answer criticism to my Pegasus day.

Now that we are a day removed from the Pegasus World Championship, let’s look back. First of all, my day, described in Sunday’s newsletter, may have been taken as more critical than intended. But that was my day. Honest.

And you won’t pull me off the idea that the Gulfstream drag (delaying the post for at least six minutes when the MTP is at zero) is a good thing. Imagine if NASA had used that approach for spacecraft launches. We still wouldn’t be to the moon. I was brought up as an East Coaster and being on time is a sign of respect. That’s how I was reared.

Now, overall, I had a great experience at the Pegasus. It was likely an excellent day for those in attendance. But one point I tried to make is that if you can talk your way into the place as easily as I did, that’s not a good thing.

The real hero of Saturday, next to Gun Runner, was Jordan’s Henny, whose $120.00 win in the ninth race created a massive mandatory payout for Sunday’s Rainbow Six. That builds a huge handle, which is good for the track and racing.

Many of the things that Stronach racing boss Tim Ritvo implemented at Gulfstream are good for the business. He carried that to Maryland too. And now he wants to bring it to Santa Anita. Ritvo is the best thing racing has going for it at this time, but he’s got to feel like a salmon swimming upstream with a riverbank filled with hungry bears.

Could Santa Anita have brought in a $40 million-plus handle (all sources) like Gulfstream did? I don’t know. But I think it’s worth a try. If not, the industry has bigger problems.

Bolt D’Oro jockey switch

The Kentucky Derby story of the week was broken by El Golden of Santa Anita. It seems as though Corey Nakatani has been replaced as Bolt Doro’s jockey by Javier Castellano.

Trainer and owner Mick Ruis had offered no excuses for Bolt’s extremely wide trip during the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, in which he finished third. But there was speculation that Nakatani’s ride was not without criticism. Ruis had remained silent until Sunday, when he told Golden he was switching jockeys.

Nakatani was a good story, an older jockey hoping to work his way into the Hall of Fame by winning his first Kentucky Derby. But Ruis, though extremely personable, is a businessman first, and switching to the four-time Eclipse Award winning jockey can’t be viewed as a bad thing.

“Castellano’s going to ride Bolt D’Oro in the San Felipe,” Ruis told Golden. “I was disappointed in the Breeders’ Cup, but I just don’t want to make excuses.”

Santa Anita review

Calculator easily won Sunday’s feature, the $75,000 Clockers’ Corner Stakes down the hill at 6 1/2 furlongs. It was his third straight win down the track’s unique turf course.

“He broke really good and I just decided to make the lead,” winning jockey Flavien Prat told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “I knew the fractions were fast but he was comfortable. … He was the best horse.”

Calculator paid $3.80, $2.60 and $2.10 for trainer Peter Miller. Fly To Mars was second and Perfectly Majestic finished third.
