Racing! More on the NHC and other tidbits

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as things change in the top 10 Kentucky Derby rankings.

It’s early, but you can feel the buzz over the Kentucky Derby already starting to build. And Jon White, the morning-line maker at Santa Anita, has tremendous insight into what is a long road. He’s doing this weekly feature looking at his Top 10 heading toward the Derby.

So, Jon, the floor is yours.

“Audible debuts on my Kentucky Derby Top 10 list this week following his 5 1/2-length victory in the Holy Bull. I certainly was impressed by the way he drew away in the stretch. I also think the gusto with which he galloped out after the finish was noteworthy. But where did this performance come from? It was so much better than anything seen before from Audible it is understandable that there are those who are viewing him with some skepticism. Those not yet convinced that Audible is the real deal want to see him validate his big Holy Bull effort in his next race, which likely will be the Mar. 31 Florida Derby.

“I view the four horses ranked higher than Audible as big-time Kentucky Derby contenders. It appears to me that McKinzie, Instilled Regard, Good Magic and Bolt d'Oro all are exceptional 3-year-olds in terms of talent.

“Withers winner Avery Island also is a newbie on my Top 10 list this week, as is Sporting Chance, last year's Hopeful Stakes winner. I am very intrigued by Sporting Chance, who is flying under the radar. Sporting Chance not only reportedly has been training like a beast at Oaklawn Park, he's trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who has won the Kentucky Derby four times. Sporting Chance is scheduled to make his first start of the year in Oaklawn's Feb. 19 Southwest Stakes.

“Catholic Boy, who I have ranked No. 9, makes his initial 2018 start in Saturday's Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. It will be his first race since he won the Dec. 2 Remsen Stakes in New York by 4 3/4 lengths. That victory by Catholic Boy looks even better now after Remsen runner-up Avery Island won the Withers.”

NHC update

Gotta say, I was surprised at the reaction to writing about the National Horseplayers Championship. A lot of you are interested. So, maybe I should write about the local tournaments more often.

So, in the interest of keeping you up on things, here’s some more information.

Friday is the first day and you are given a mythical $2 win and $2 place bet to bet on eight mandatory races and 10 optional races. The eligible tracks to bet your optional plays are Aqueduct, Fair Grounds, Golden Gate, Gulfstream, Laurel, Oaklawn, Santa Anita and Tampa Bay Downs.

The mandatory races are (all times PST):

11:57 Oaklawn, Race 2, 6 furlongs, $8,000 claiming, 4 and up, purse: $20,000

12:44 Tampa Bay, Race 7, 1 1/16 miles on turf, $16,000 claiming, fillies and mares 4 and up, purse: $18,700.

1:06 Gulfstream, Race 9, 1 1/16 miles on turf, $20,000 claiming, fillies and mares 4 and up, purse: $28,000

2:08 Gulfstream, Race 11, 5 furlongs on turf, $16,000 claiming, 4 and up, purse: $21,000

3:10 Oaklawn, Race 9, 1 mile, starter allowance, fillies and mares 4 and up, purse: $25,000

3:53 Golden Gate, Race 7, 5 ½ furlongs, $4,000 claiming, 4 and up, purse: $9,000

4:30 Santa Anita, Race 8, 6 ½ furlongs, allowance/optional claiming ($75,000), fillies 3 years old, purse: $56,000

5:00 Santa Anita, Race 9, 1 mile on turf, $25,000 claiming, fillies and mares 4 and up, purse: $23,000

Feel free to play along at home, and by free, that’s exactly what you’ll win if you top any of the people in Las Vegas. But, if you do well, you might look to entering one of the many tournaments during the year.

Santa Anita review

River Boyne, going off as the favorite, won Thursday’s feature by 2 ¾ lengths, a $56,000 allowance race over 1 mile on the turf.

“He’s got a great kick,” winning jockey Flavien Prat told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “He broke sharp and he put me right into the race and then he finished like he did. Very impressive.”

The 3-year-old paid $4.60, $3.00 and $2.80 for trainer Jeff Mullins. The horse is now pointed to the Pasadena Stakes on Mar. 17.

No one hit the pick six, so there is a carryover of $31,694.

Santa Anita preview

Santa Anita has a mysterious nine-race (instead of eight) card on Friday. Maybe, it’s so they can have a 5 p.m. race for the NHC. Either way, doesn’t really matter. Although, if you look above, you can see the eighth and ninth races are part of the NHC and have fields of eight and nine.

Sentimental favorite Ziconic is the third choice at 4-1 in the first race at 1 p.m. He’s in a 1 mile turf race for maidens. After 11 starts, Ziconic is still looking for his first win. Why do we love him? He’s the son of the legendary Zenyatta. It’s almost as if your mom is a Nobel Prize winner and the son is, well, something akin to a person who writes about horse racing. Know what I mean?

Five of the nine races are for maidens, but the fifth race has only five runners. The second and third have six. Every other race is OK, but when the numbers get low, the panic level rises.

Bob Ike’s S.A. play of the day

NINTH RACE: No. 3 Agent Nine T Nine (5-1)

In a wide-open finale, let's try an older mare trained by Dan Blacker. She turned in a solid effort off the layoff when making her first turf start (in a race that has produced two next-out winners), switches to Prat and removes blinkers. She figures to be close up early and the auxiliary rails are out 30 feet, which often favors forwardly-placed runners.

Thursday Result: River Boyne ($4.60) was an easy winner while bet down to 6/5 odds.

Los Alamitos weekend preview

I’ve decided to leave this weekly segment in the hands of Orlando Gutierrez, marketing and media maven at Los Al. So, take it away, Orlando.

“After a couple of nights off on Super Bowl weekend, the running of the Grade 1, $215,450 Los Alamitos Winter Derby on Saturday and the Grade 1, $157,250 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship on Sunday highlight the weekend. Racing resumes on Friday evening at 7 with a Pick 6 carryover of $9,261.

“Friday’s eight-race program features four allowance events. The seventh race will be headed by Ron Hartley’s Myfavoritestreaker and My Favorite Check competing at 350 yards. My Favorite Check will be making his first start since running third to 2016 Champion of Champions winner Zoomin for Spuds in an allowance race on Nov. 4. My Favorite Check has hit the board in 16 of 19 career starts and is the one to watch.

“The Los Alamitos Winter Derby at 400 yards on Saturday will have four runners who competed in the Dec. 17 Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, the richest race last year. Lisa Anderson’s Moonie Blues was second in the Los Alamitos Two Million final, but in her derby trial she lost the lead to Martha Wells’ Yanque and took second. Moonie Blues still qualified to the Winter Derby, but she’ll need a big finish to hold off Yanque and other strong finishers such as Matilda Czech. Matilda Czech will be joined by Ditto Head and Jess My Kiss as the other runners from last year’s Two Million Futurity. The Winter Derby the ninth race.

“The running of the Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship could provide some special moments for Los Alamitos owner Ed Allred. The Grade 1 race is already one that’s close to Allred’s heart, as he named it in honor of his longtime friend and employee following McKinzie’s passing last August. Allred could now win the Brad McKinzie with his homebred He Looks Hot, a three-time Grade 1 winner who posted the fastest qualifying time to this race on Jan. 21.

“Allred hired McKinzie to be Los Alamitos’ general manager in the early 1990s and over the years assigned him several major projects for the track, including overseeing Los Alamitos’ expansion to host daytime thoroughbred racing. Brad’s mother, Jean, and his brother, Mark, will be on hand at Los Alamitos to present the trophy to the winning owner.”

Chris Wade’s L.A. play of the day

RACE THREE: No. 7 Papa G (4-1)

Papa G is a hard trier who has earned high figures on my charts, making him very competitive in this race. The 6-year-old finished a solid third in his most recent effort 21 nights ago despite a less than stellar wide journey versus a quality cast. This gelding was also hampered by a rough trip in his previous outing as well. With an outside post that should ensure this runner a clean getaway, let's push this runner steadily at a medium mutual for a good small shedrow.

(Note: Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)
