Racing! On to the second day of a three-day weekend

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as the Derby picture gets more muddied.

The Kentucky Derby road got a little more interesting, if not unclear, as it always does this time of year.

Bravazo won the first semi-major prep of the year by winning the Risen Star at the Fair Grounds on Saturday.

It was worth 50 points, assuring him a spot in the Kentucky Derby, should he continue on that path. Bravazo was at 21-1 and he barely beat Snapper Sinclair, who went off at 41-1. The favorite, Installed Regard, a Southern California shipper, finished fourth.

If this was just a blip for Installed Regard, then the race will be written off. But, he will have to prove himself in the last major prep before the Kentucky Derby.

In the El Camino Real at Golden Gate, Paved, a filly, ran a strong race to beat a field of non-obvious Derby contenders. She gained 10 points for winning the race.

The current standings, skewed by who has had more prep races, looks like this:

Bravazo 54, Good Magic 24, Firenze Fire 24, Snapper Sinclair 22, McKinzie 20, Installed Regard 19, Bolt D’Oro 14, Free Drop Billy 14, Solomini 14, Catholic Boy 14, Avery Island 14.

We always like to point out some of the Times longer stories and here’s one on Skye Diamonds, who runs Sunday at Santa Anita. She’s the 8-5 favorite in the Las Flores Stakes for fillies and mares 4 and up over 6 furlongs. The trainer is Bill Spawr, one of the true delights on the backstretch. Give the story a read by clicking here.

Santa Anita review

Fault was the surprise winner of the Grade 2, $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes, winning by a length over Thundering Sky. The race for older fillies and mares was a mile on the turf.

Little-heralded jockey Geovanni Franco ran a patient race and with a little more than a quarter-mile left in the race, took the rail to win going away. It was Phil D’Amato’s first race with the horse.

She paid $26.20, $13.80 and $8.60.

“I knew she was a very consistent filly and was only getting better back east,” D’Amato said. “She had a bad luck trip at Fair Grounds [fourth in her last start on Dec. 30 going a mile on turf] but from the very first time I breezed her I thought, ‘This is a horse I’ve been looking for in this category for quite a while.’”

As for the rest, it’s a nine-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. After a Saturday with very full fields, things dip a bit with three races of six horses and one with five. The field sizes, in order: 9, 5, 6, 6, 9, 9, 8, 6, 10 (4 also eligible).

There is a secondary stakes, the $75,000 Baffles Stakes. It’s 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

FOURTH RACE: No. 6 Afleet Ascent (5-1)

Impressive maiden winner from the Peter Miller barn took severe heat from the rail post but still put away his rivals for a smart victory. He steps up into this small stakes but looks quicker than his five rivals and could prove very hard to collar at a square price.

Saturday’s Result: Gringo Star (1st race) had a perfect stalking trip from outside but lacked punch in the lane.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com (here’s a video) and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Chris Wade’s LA pick of the day

SEVENTH RACE: Still Trying (4-1)

Still Trying is the play for us as he boasts connections that are teaming up to win at a 29% clip. Still Trying went well for second place in his most recent start versus one of his maiden rivals that’ll he’ll be facing tonight. In the process, Still Trying earned a career best figure on our charts and a repeat performance or better could be in the cards.

(Note: Don’t worry, Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)
