Racing! Another Southern Californian impresses on Derby trail

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we delve into the inner secrets of trainer Peter Miller.

It has been a while since we’ve done one of those question-and-answer sessions about everything but horse racing. So, let’s bring Miller into the hot seat and find out his answers to questions he has never been asked.

What is your favorite television show that you are watching?

“Seinfeld” is my favorite of all time. I’ve seen every one of them.

If you weren’t a trainer, what would you be?

Unemployed. Pretty much.

What is your all-time favorite movie?

“The Big Lebowski”. It’s just a great movie. I can relate to growing up in L.A. and the dude character. He’s an L.A. kind of guy.

If you could have lunch or dinner with anyone living or dead, who would that be?

That’s a good one. I’m going to say Barack Obama. That guy just fascinates me. He’s a smart guy. He would be one guess, others would be Steve Jobs or Elon Musk.

What’s No. 1 on your bucket list?

I’ve done most of them. I’d like to travel the world at some point.

What’s your favorite food?

Italian, everything from pizza to pasta.

What’s your favorite kind of music?

Believe it or not, I grew up in the ‘80s and I like classic rock and I Iike hip-hop. I grew up in Los Angeles around the time of Snoop Dogg and NWA. And being a teenager, we listened to a lot of Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Thanks, Peter.

Road to the Derby

My Boy Jack, a 3-year-old in the care of Keith Desormeaux, laid his claim to being on the Kentucky Derby trail Monday by winning the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn. Under a masterful ride from Keith’s brother Kent Desormeaux, My Boy Jack ran the rail to win the race worth 10 Derby qualifying points. He’ll have to perform well in at least another prep race to assure a place in the Derby.

Kent Desormeaux might have benefited from watching Hawaakom win the Razorback Stakes in the previous race over a muddy course. The rail seemed to be the best way to get around the track and in the stretch, and Kent duplicated that effort. Another Southern California horse, Mourhino, for trainer Bob Baffert, ran on and near the front until the stretch, but faded to fourth.

My Boy Jack finished third in the Sham Stakes to another Baffert runner, McKinzie.

Santa Anita review

In the first stakes race Monday, the $200,000 California Cup Oaks, it was revenge time for jockey Corey Nakatani. His filly, running a mile on the turf for 3-year-olds, was the top call for trainer Mick Ruis, but was booted off One Fast Broad, Bolt D’Oro and others.

But Nakatani brought Pulpit Rider home to edge One Fast Broad in the stretch to win the stakes by 2½ lengths.

“This is such a testament to [trainer] Mike [Puype],” Nakatani said. “He asked me about this filly and if I’d like to ride her so I said, ‘Sure, I think I’d be a great asset to your team. I’ll go out there and give it my all.’ ”

Pulpit Rider paid $7.60, $3.20 and $2.20.

In the second stakes, the $200,000 California Cup Derby, over 1 1/16 miles, Baffert showed he has yet another promising 3-year-old. Heck Yeah, under a confident ride from Mike Smith, won by 1¼ lengths over Violent Ridge.

Heck Yeah is unbeaten in three starts. He paid $3.80, $2.60 and $2.40.

“I know this is the first Derby of the year that I’ve won,” Baffert said. “I’m really proud of this horse. Naturally, I think he’s a better turf horse but he gutted it out today.”
