Racing! Digging down into the numbers at Santa Anita

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we look at some of the recent handle successes at Santa Anita.

First of all, some good news for all subscribers. Eric (Manny) Sondheimer will be piloting this newsletter tomorrow. So be gentle.

Now, a familiar topic. The Santa Anita average handle is up more than $1.1 million a day. Santa Anita (and other Stronach tracks) boss Tim Ritvo is happy with that, but says it needs to be sustained.

“The tough thing is to be up year after year after year,” Ritvo said. “We’re on a seven-year span in Florida [at Gulfstream]. We’re hoping we can make that magic happen here. There is no silver bullet. It’s a lot of little things. But any time you say we’re up, I’ll take it.”

It’s difficult to compare raw numbers of year over year as Santa Anita has two more racing days and 17 more races than at this point last year. But if you drill down to the bets, here’s what you’ll discover.

By taking daily averages, going into Friday you find:

--The high-five is up 74.8%, but, of course, it is offered more frequently and on a rolling basis.

--The early pick five is up 28.2%. It’s now a 50-cent bet.

--The pick three is up 15.5%.

--Trifectas are up 15.2%, with no real changes, just higher volume.

--The daily double is up 14.8%, but it is a low-volume wager.

--The late pick five didn’t exist last year but has had $10,882,357 bet on it. That’s new revenue, but did it hurt the pick six?

--The pick six is up 7.8%, no doubt due to some nice carryovers.

“We’re really studying the pick six and the $2 play may have lived its day,” Ritvo said. “Without a carryover it doesn’t get big play. But if you make it $1, will you have fewer carryovers? That’s what we are studying.

“We’re still looking at creating simpler lower denomination bets. You need to keep the customer churning and not have them killed by the time half the card is over.”

There is no doubt Ritvo is on a mission to fix Santa Anita. The track has benefited from nice weather here and bad weather in the Northeast. But, it’s not just a weather issue. It’s safe to say that some of the betting changes Ritvo has implemented are having a positive impact. It’s a step in the right direction.

Santa Anita review

You’ve heard of the “other Baffert” betting strategy, meaning bet Bob Baffert’s second-best horse, well, a version of the “other Miller” was in play Saturday in the $150,000 Daytona Stakes for horses going 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside course.

Conquest Tsunami, the highest priced of three of trainer Peter Miller’s horses, scored a 2 1/2-length win in a race that Miller went 1-2-3. Stormy Liberal was second and Calculator finished third.

“There was just one way to go,” winning jockey Victor Espinoza said. “I broke in front and kept my position all the way to the wire. I think … the main thing is to let him go and just run his race. I felt he was going pretty quick but he was doing it so easily so I was pretty much a passenger. I just wanted to make sure he crossed the dirt OK and then let him really run in the stretch.”

Conquest Tsunami paid $12.40, $5.80 and $3.20.

“This race kind of went to plan,” Miller said. “They all got good trips, maybe Stormy Liberal was a little further back than I would have liked, but for his first race since Hong Kong, I thought he went well. All three of them ran super.”

In the other stakes, the $75,000 Wishing Well Stakes, for fillies and mares 4 and up, going down the hillside course, Mongolian Shopper pulled a major upset winning the race by about a length.

She stalked on the outside for most of the ride down the hill and then after crossing the dirt sped to an uncontested win.

She paid $48.20, $17.80 and $9.20.

Santa Anita preview

Santa Anita’s Sunday card is hopefully a bit of an aberration with three races (including the stakes) with five horses and one with six. Is this a blip or a problem? Recent stats show that going into Friday, the average field size was 8.30 and a year ago it was 7.54. Saturday’s card even exceeded the average with 8.80. So, well see what plays out. First post is 12:30 p.m.

The feature is the $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes for Cal-bred older fillies and mares going 6 furlongs. It only has five horses and two of them are likely to be heavily bet. The 6-5 morning-line favorite is Majestic Heat for Richard Mandella. She is seven of 18 lifetime with most of those races on the turf. She won the Bayakoa at Los Alamitos and the Betty Grable at Del Mar. Flavien Prat rode both Majestic Heat and Miss Sunset in their last races but has the call on Majestic Heat. She has won more than $558,000.

Miss Sunset is the second favorite at 8-5 for trainer Jeff Bonde. She gets Mike Smith, who has also ridden both horses, in the saddle. She is seven of 13 lifetime and was five for 10 last year. She has earned more than $618,000.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

FIRST RACE No. 5 Particleacelerator (4-1)

Speedy older gelding from the Kenny Black barn went fast early and tired in his comeback race last month but catches a paceless field in here. Not only that, the open $25,000 claimer he exits was a much tougher spot than this restricted $40,000 (non winners of two races lifetime), so with the hidden class drop and pace edge, wave him goodbye.

Saturday Result: Karmic Affinity ($3.40) was bet off the board (3-1 morning line) and responded with an easy victory in the eighth race.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com (here’s a video) and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Chris Wade’s LA pick of the day

RACE SEVEN: No. 1 RYTHUM N BLUES GIRL (7-2)

I’m going with Rythum N Blues Girl, a 7-2 morning-line choice in the seventh race, after immensely improved recent effort 36 nights ago versus quality opposition. She earned a career topping number with trouble and track variant factored in. She should be a threat for all the board placings at a medium mutual with a repeat for new connections that do well with first time in the shed-row runners.

(Note: Don’t worry, Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)
