Racing! Time for another handicapping lesson

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we learn about new post times at Santa Anita in March.

It’s a pretty quiet weekend everywhere when it comes to top flight racing and the road to the Kentucky Derby. It’s been a while nationally when you’ve seen only six stakes of $100,000 or more on a Saturday.

Although the two most interesting, I think, are the Daytona Stakes at Santa Anita with the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Stormy Liberal and the Hal’s Hope Stakes at Gulfstream, only because Irish War Cry, who seemed so promising entering last year’s Derby, is running as the favorite.

We caught up Keith Desormeaux, trainer of My Boy Jack, as he talked about how the Kentucky Derby points system is hurting his horse. And Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo talks about the uptick in handle and what may have caused it. To read, just click here.

And, finally, this headline just in. Starting March 11, with the start of Daylight Savings Time, Santa Anita is going to a brunch start time of 11:30 a.m. on Sundays. The other days will be noon, except for Triple Crown Saturdays, when they will likely be earlier.

A handicapping lesson

Here’s our weekly contribution from Rob Henie of the WCHR (West Coast Handicapping Report) and the ECHR (East Coast Handicapping Report). Rob knows his stuff. If you used his selected $20-win wagers so far at Santa Anita, you would have bet $2,060 and won $2,760. If you’ve stuck with him since its inception on July 7, you would have bet $5,840 and won $7,713. That’s 30% profit. So, with that, here’s his latest advice on things to look at when handicapping.

Here’s his analysis is for the first race at Santa Anita.

“A new day from The Great Race Place, and things begin with a maiden special weight at 1 ⅛ miles on the TURF. The appropriate word for this offering would INTENTIONS. Let’s take a look. Top selection is TIDAL EFFECT (#1). A few months ago, he debuted in the Cliff Sise barn, sprinting on the main track, transferred soon after to Simon Callaghan. In his first try for Simon, he moved to the turf, and I GUARANTEE this was the conversation to rider Rajiv Maragh in the paddock - “let’s see what he’s got. Take back and let him find himself.” When you watch the race, Rajiv is simply letting the horse figure things out early on before he finally calls upon for more around the ⅜ pole, commencing some nice action, also galloping out strongly. Very playable here. PHOENIX FIRE (#4) is a $1.2 million purchase, and Bob Baffert doesn’t go 1⅛ on the turf unless they’re fit and ready. Do you think he’s gonna bring a price like this one to the races if not ready, saying “let’s give him the race at 1⅛.” ? No. Drayden Van Dyke is up, of course we love that (yes, everyone knows Drayden is our favorite jock in the country), and a win here would not be shocking one bit, working super.

Hot / Cold Race Trends: none

Maiden Listed Condition: MSW

WCHR Estimated Level: $40,000

Win Contenders (order of preference): 1-4-2-3

X Out Runners (eliminating on the win end): 7,8

Negative Notes:

9 Concur - It’s not that he’s bad, is just that he offers little value from what we’ve seen, in comparison to what the others will be offering on the board, in relation to the room for improvement they offer as well.

First Timers:

2 Negro Lucero - Victor Garcia is sharp, so the fact he goes this long at first asking, with a horse who’s even shown more speed than often shown from Victor prior to a debut, AND, gives a leg up to excellent turf rider Talamo, all interesting with a huge price attached.

TOP PICK: TIDAL EFFECT (#1 12-1 Maragh) $ Win Wager

SECOND CHOICE: PHOENIX FIRE (#4 5-1 Van Dyke) $ Win Wager

Santa Anita review

There were no stakes races on Friday, but the feature, a $58,000 allowance race down the 6 1/2-furlong hillside turf course, was won by longshot Double Touch for the Dan Blacker barn. He beat Cimpl Man by half-a-length.

Double Touch, running his first time down the hill, paid $25.00, $9.60 and $4.60.

“I always thought he’d be the type of horse that would be coming down the hill,” Blacker told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “We never had a chance to try it until today.”

Santa Anita preview

It’s a 10-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. with two stakes races, both 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course. The field size has an average of 8.80, which is above the meet average of 8.30.

The better of the two stakes is the Grade 3 $150,000 Daytona Stakes. Headlining is Stormy Liberal, who is the 2-1 favorite but it would be shocking if he didn’t go to even money or lower. He had won six of seven races including the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Then he went to Hong Kong in his last race and finished 11th.

Calculator, also for trainer Peter Miller, is the second favorite at 5-2. He is undefeated in three trips down the hill. He was seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The race is the fourth at about 2:05 p.m.

The second stakes is the $75,000 Wishing Well Stakes for the same conditions as the Daytona but for fillies and mares 4 and up. Samba Inc, the 5-2 favorite, is a lightly-raced Argentine-bred filly for Bob Baffert. She has won three races in a row. This is her first appearance in the U.S.

Bendable, with Mike Smith aboard for Richard Mandella, is the 3-1 second favorite. She is three-for-four at Santa Anita but only one turf race, a second down the hill. It will be the 10th and final race at about 5:15 p.m.

Big races preview

A look at graded stakes or races worth more $100,000 or more on Saturday. All times PST.

10:50 Aqueduct: $100,000 Franklin Square Stakes, 3 year olds, 6 furlongs. Favorite: Pauseforthecause (2-1)

2:09 Oaklawn: $100,000 Downthedustyroad Breeders’ Stakes, Ark-bred fillies and mares 3 and up, 6 furlongs. Favorite: Ministry (9-5)

2:35 Gulfstream: Grade 3 $100,000 Hal’s Hope Stakes, 4 and up, 1 mile. Favorite: Irish War Cry (5-2)

2:38 Oaklawn: $125,000 Gazebo Stakes, 3 year olds, 6 furlongs. Favorite: Mitole (1-2)

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 10 Karmic Affinity (3-1)

Second-time starter from the Mike Pender barn ran huge in her debut, taking heat from down inside every step of the way before settling for second at 20-1. She now moves outside, switches to Kent Desormeaux and has had almost a month since her bow. “Single” in all late exotic plays.

Friday Result: B Squared was hammered to 4/5 in the wagering but could only manage third after an absolutely gorgeous trip from the outside.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com (here’s a video) and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Chris Wade’s LA play of the day

RACE SIX: No. 6 DASH DE VILLE (4-1)

While the 6-5 morning-line favorite Sokudo is, in my opinion, the best bet of the night when he runs in Saturday’s second race at 4 ½ furlongs, my play of the night comes in race number six when the John Cooper-trained Dash De Ville starts from the outside post at 300 yards. The sophomore gelding will open at 4-1, but he needs to improve on his knack for having troubled trips. On the other hand, Dash De Ville has shown a lot of ability in his three career efforts and puts up competitive figures for this start when trouble and track variants are taken into account. He also draws a perfect post to show off his late running style.

(Note: Don’t worry, Ed Burgart hasn’t gone away, he’s just on vacation.)
