Racing! Clockers’ Corner is one of the best deals in town

Share

Hello, my name is Eric Sondheimer, and I’m filling in for John Cherwa for today’s horse racing newsletter.

There’s no better deal in town than the free coffee offered at Clockers’ Corner at Santa Anita every morning when training is taking place.

You can hang out with Bob Baffert, Phil D’Amato, Jerry Hollendorfer and Neil Drysdale while watching dozens of horses working out, galloping or breezing on the main and training tracks.

Activity begins at 4:45 a.m. and continues until around 9 a.m. The temperature was in the 40s this week, so gloves, ear muffs, ski caps and winter jackets were everywhere.

“It’s ridiculous,” said one track worker. “I feel like I’m back in New York.”

Yes, it has been a little chilly in sunny Arcadia, but the steaming hot coffee, heated lamps next to tables overlooking the track and free parking makes Clockers’ Corner one of the best-kept secrets to take an out-of-town visitor. And if they’re from Michigan or Minnesota, they’ll probably think we’re experiencing a heat wave.

Here’s the link to a video of what you get to see.

Feature race

Miss Sunset is one of the top Cal-bred filly sprinters, and she was at her best in Sunday’s $100,000 Spring Fever Stakes at Santa Anita, rolling to a 2½-length victory under Mike Smith at six furlongs.

“She ran really well today and she felt better than she’s ever felt,” Smith said. “She’s really, really quick.”

Miss Sunset has won eight of 14 starts for trainer Jeff Bonde.

Looking ahead at Santa Anita

The big race this coming weekend at Santa Anita is for 3-year-old fillies, the Grade III Santa Ysabel Stakes on Saturday.

Unbeaten Dream Tree, four for four, will likely face Midnight Bisou.

But the real anticipation is the Grade II $400,000 San Felipe Stakes on March 10 for Triple Crown hopefuls. Bolt d’Oro is training to make his 2018 debut in the race. He’s scheduled to work out Monday, with four-time Eclipse Award winner Javier Castellano coming to town just to ride him. Also possible in the race are McKinzie and/or Solomini from the Baffert stable.

Trials and tribulations of ownership

Brave Helios, the 3-year-old colt I own with Jeff Siegel, hasn’t had an official workout since Dec. 28 because of a sore shin. He’s back galloping and set to resume workouts this week. As a first-time owner, I’m learning all about patience and also pleading for the person writing the condition book to offer more turf races for 3-year-olds of nonwinners of two.

I’ve also learned my horse loves German health muffins. He could eat the whole box if available. Thank goodness for Amazon. And my trainer has put an orange cone in front of his stall. He apparently is getting feisty and taking bites out of arms. That’s a good sign he’s happy and raring to go.
