Racing! Jon White’s top 10 Kentucky Derby horses before the San Felipe

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as Sunday’s card at Santa Anita has suddenly gotten much more interesting.

This just in: Bob Baffert’s super-horse in waiting, Justify, is a surprise entrant in the fifth race on Sunday, a mile allowance for a purse of $56,000. Justify has been the talk of the backstretch with a 9½-length win in his debut and a couple of bullet workouts.

He was originally scheduled to run in the Sunland Derby in two weeks, but Baffert switched him to Sunday’s race. There are whispers that Justify may be in the class of American Pharaoh. A convincing win on Sunday could point him to the Santa Anita Derby.

Another sign that Baffert is serious about this 3-year-old colt is that he has taken Drayden Van Dyke off the horse and put Mike Smith on it. Smith also rides McKinzie, the favorite in Saturday’s San Felipe.

And while we’re talking about the weekend, here’s a preview of Saturday’s Santa Anita Handicap. The favorite, at 5-2, is Accelerate, for trainer John Sadler. We caught up with him and owner Kosta Hronis. Take a read right here.

Jon White’s Top 10

This Saturday should really shake up the Kentucky Derby rankings, especially with the San Felipe at Santa Anita. So, don’t get wedded to these rankings because they are about to be blown up. Doing the demolition will be the insightful Jon White, the morning-line maker at Santa Anita. He’ll give you a front-row seat on what to look for and what to expect. Here’s this week’s look at his Top 10 with an eye to the future.

So, Jon, it’s in your hands.

“Odds-on favorite Good Magic had a perfect trip all the way to the top of the stretch in last Saturday's Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. But when it came to crunch time, the ‘magic’ just was not there for the Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male of 2017. Good Magic did not have any punch in the lane and finished third behind front-running longshot Promises Fulfilled and 7-2 Strike Power.

“Not wanting to overreact to Good Magic's defeat, I have moved him down only one notch this week from No. 2 to No. 3. After all, the Fountain of Youth was his first start since he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last Nov. 4. It will not be surprising if the Curlin colt moves forward off this loss and runs better next time. But he certainly needs to do that in order for me to continue ranking him as one of the top three Kentucky Derby contenders. According to trainer Chad Brown, the tentative plan is for Good Magic to make his next start in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 7.

“Promises Fulfilled enters my Top 10 this week at No. 6. The Shackleford colt showed that he was ready to roll in the Fountain of Youth even though he had not raced since finishing third in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs last Nov. 25. Dale Romans trains Promises Fulfilled, who now has won three of four career starts. Romans also conditioned Shackleford, who won the 2011 Preakness Stakes. For Promises Fulfilled, now it's on to the Florida Derby at Gulfstream on March 31, a race that also is being targeted by Holy Bull Stakes winner Audible.

“As a result of Good Magic's slight demotion to No. 3 this week, Bolt D'Oro moves up to No. 2. That means Saturday's San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita will be a mouth-watering early-season clash between the two top-ranked horses on my Kentucky Derby list, No. 1 McKinzie and No. 2 Bolt d'Oro.

“Will either McKinzie or Bolt D'Oro win the San Felipe to firmly establish himself as a consensus early Kentucky Derby favorite? Or will they both prove unable to get the job done? Who knows? Perhaps the San Felipe will produce an upset a la this year's Fountain of Youth Stakes (won by 18-1 Promises Fulfilled), Risen Star Stakes (won by 21-1 Bravazo) and Southwest Stakes (won by 8-1 My Boy Jack).

“While the San Felipe certainly is the most significant race this week on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the Tampa Bay Derby and Aqueduct's Gotham Stakes also will be decided Saturday. Neither the Tampa Bay Derby nor the Gotham has attracted a horse currently on my Top 10 list.”

  1. McKinzie (1)
  1. Bolt D'Oro (3)
  1. Good Magic (2)
  1. Audible (4)
  1. Solomini (5)
  1. Promises Fulfilled (NR)
  1. Instilled Regard (6)
  1. Catholic Boy (7)
  1. Avery Island (8)

10. My Boy Jack (9)

Santa Anita review

Core Beliefs, a maiden no more, may have joined the Triple Crown trail with a 3¼-length win over 11/16 miles in Thursday’s feature. Trained by Peter Eurton and ridden by Smith, the $350,000 purchase made easy work of the small field of five.

Eurton’s daughter, Britney of TVG, laid out this plan to Mike Willman of Santa Anita.

“Allowance, Lexington (1 1/16 miles on March 28 at Keeneland), then the Preakness (1 3/16 miles on May 19 at Pimlico).”

Core Beliefs paid $6.60, $3.20 and $2.60.

Santa Anita preview

Don’t know what’s in the water but the field sizes are swelling at Santa Anita on Friday and again on Sunday. Friday’s nine race card, starting at 1 p.m., goes like this as far as horses entered: 7, 7, 6, 9, 10 (2 also eligible), 12, 11, 10 (4 AE), 12.

The races don’t seem to be a lot different than usual but the entry box is clearly filling up. The feature is the eighth, an allowance going one mile on the turf for Cal-bred fillies and mares 3 and up. It carries a purse of $56,000.

There are three turf races on the card, as usual.

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

SEVENTH RACE No. 3 Trap Queen (6-1)

Quick filly from the Mike Machowsky barn was outkicked late when facing similar but could be dangerous in this spot with a repeat effort. The extra half-furlong could pose a problem but we're hoping 'Queen might be able to open some daylight in mid-stretch and hold on.

Thursday Result: Two Thirty Five was bet hard (7/2 morning line, went off at 8/5) but handled his opponents first off the Richard Baltas claim under good apprentice rider Frankin Ceballos.

Los Alamitos weekend preview

This weekly segment is now in the hands of Orlando Gutierrez, marketing and media maven at Los Al. So, the floor is yours, Orlando.

“Los Alamitos was the home to an exceptional group of freshman fillies in 2017. J Fire Up was at the head of this class and at season’s end was named PCQHRA Horse of the Year, AQHA champion 2-year-old and AQHA champion 2-year-old filly.

“In addition to J Fire Up, this division also featured Wild West Futurity winner Moonie Blues, Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity runner-up Matilda Czech, and graded stakes finalists Summertime Favorite and A Political Lady. All four of these top fillies will be in action on Saturday night in the trials to the Grade 3, $183,800 La Primera Del Ano Derby at 400 yards. There will be two trials with the 10 fastest times qualifying to the La Primera Del Ano final on March 30.

“Moonie Blues and Matilda Czech will be in the second of the trials. This will be their third meeting since Dec. 17. Moonie Blues has finished ahead of Matilda Czech in both of those starts. A Political Lady, who could be a major star in 2018, will head the opening trial. She was third in the Golden State Million to J Fire Up and Matilda Czech and won her sophomore debut in style.

“Sunday night will be the trials to the Grade 3 El Primero Del Ano Derby. KVN Corona, the 2-year-old champion colt, will put his undefeated record on the line. He won the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million and Grade 2 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity last year to go six for six. Jesus Rios Ayala will ride KVN Corona for the first time.

“Two good races have developed in the standings with just one win separating the four leading riders, while the top four trainers are tied with 11 wins.

Chris O’Dell was the leading trainer going into the last weekend in February before Jose Flores took over the lead. Valentin Zamudio then joined Flores for the top spots after saddling two winners Saturday. Paul Jones, the perennial leading trainer, joined them at the top by picking his 11th win with Stare In My Eyes on Sunday night before O’Dell made it a tie by saddling GS Wintermeyer to victory in the last race.

Eduardo Nicasio was the winning rider aboard GS Wintermeyer to give him his 15th win, tying him with Cruz Mendez for the lead in the jockey standings. Nicasio’s wins have come from just 49 mounts for a win ratio of 30.6%. Mendez has been just as hot, winning at a 30% clip. Rios Ayala and De Alba are right behind them with 14 wins each.”

Ed Burgart’s LA play of the day

THIRD RACE: No. 4 Hedoesitinstyle (2-1)

He figures to be in a good tactical position while stretching back out to 4½ furlongs after finishing fourth against much tougher at 4 furlongs in last start two weeks ago. I liked his maiden victory at this distance three outs ago when beating Piper Pegasus, who returned to score wire-to-wire victory at maiden $5,000 level. For those playing exotics, use No. 1 Bonmont and No. 2 Dutt Bart as exacta partners.

BEAUTIFUL BECCA stalked three deep then outside a rival, continued three wide on the second turn and into the stretch and did not rally. STARLITE STYLE a bit slow into stride, settled outside a rival, went three deep into and on the second turn and five wide into the stretch and lacked a rally. CITIZEN KITTY had speed outside then angled in, set the pace inside, offered little resistance when challenged on the second turn, took up sharply when bumped into the stretch and weakened. The stewards conducted inquiries into an incident into the stretch between FIZZY FRIDAY and CITIZEN KITTY and another incident in midstretch involving the former and DO THE DANCE but made no change when they ruled those incidents did not alter the original order of finish.
