Racing! Exciting San Felipe does little to clarify Kentucky Derby picture

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as racing has a new rivalry.

Those in attendance at Santa Anita on Saturday were treated to the best stretch duel since Arrogate and California Chrome ran in the Breeders’ Cup Classic two years ago. The San Felipe was supposed to clarify the Kentucky Derby picture, at least from West Coast-based horses. Instead, it created a rivalry between Bolt D’Oro and McKinzie. Want a lot of detail. Just click here.

In short, McKinzie crossed the line first, by a very small head, and then was placed second behind Bolt D’Oro after stewards ruled that McKinzie drifted out and impeded Bolt. It really didn’t matter who won the race, except if you were getting some of the purse money, because fans were treated to the race they wanted.

The hope is that they will meet again in the Santa Anita Derby, which is 1/16 of a mile longer. But after the race, McKinzie’s trainer, Bob Baffert, said he was “soured” by the decision and may ship McKinzie out of town. If he does that, he might have another horse to challenge Bolt. Just read down to the Santa Anita preview to learn about that horse, who races on Sunday.

The crowd on Saturday was a disappointing but understandable 17,377. The weather was lousy. The rain held off until the San Felipe, the sixth race, and then by the end of that race, as fans endured a way-too-long inquiry, the rain picked up and never subsided. The weather forecast doomed the card to all but the most fervent race goers.

It’s too bad. Santa Anita deserved much better for an outstanding card of three Grade 1s and one Grade 2, which was the San Felipe. But not even Santa Anita boss Tim Ritvo can control the weather. So you turn the page and move along.

The Santa Anita Handicap was a feel good story as likeable trainer John Sadler, a Californian through and through, won his first Big ‘Cap in his 10th try. Accelerate, a horse he wasn’t sure could go 1 ¼ miles, did so with ease. Sadler, always honest, says that mud can add distance to a horse if they are handling the track well. If you want to know about the Big ‘Cap and the other two Grade 1s. Just click here.

There was one hiccup with the infield entertainment, whose music permeated the facility. One of the six bands hit the crowd with expletive-filled song lyrics. (Bring your kids to the track and have them hear language they probably already know but haven’t told you.) Santa Anita was quick to react and turned down the music and cut the set list short. The bands are booked by a third party.

Outside of Southern California, the Kentucky Derby picture remained about as muddy as the Santa Anita track.

The $300,000 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct was won by Enticed, who previously finished fourth in the Holy Bull at Gulfstream. He won by 2 ¾ lengths over Old Time Revival. The favorite, Free Drop Billy, was third followed by Firenze Fire.

In the Tampa Bay Derby, Quip The Business, at 19-1, beat World Of Trouble by a length. Both of those winners, along with Bolt D’Oro, have a free pass into the Kentucky Derby by virtue of earning 50 qualifying points.

Santa Anita preview

Reset your clocks for daylight savings time and remember Santa Anita has a new Sunday start time of 11:30 a.m. It’s an experiment that will hopefully work. Gets everyone home quicker. You can’t be against that.

There is a $100,000 stakes race on the nine-race card but all the attention will be on a $56,000 allowance race for 3 year olds. That’s where Bob Baffert will run Justify, his superstar in the making. Justify won his debut by 9 ½ lengths. You know things are serious with this horse as Drayden Van Dyke was taken off in favor of Mike Smith.

Baffert had put out the word that Justify’s second start would be in the Sunland Derby, but there was a little subterfuge going on with that pronouncement.

“Sunland wasn’t really in the cards,” Baffert said. “Before he ran, the book came out and I thought if he wins here that [Sunland] would be a perfect spot. It would be a good plan and that’s why I said I had a plan.

“But [after his first race], if I had said he was going to run [in Sunday’s allowance] the race might not have filled. So, I had to be kind of quiet about that. You got to throw a little curve, like in baseball you give the lineup that day, not two weeks out.”

Jon White put Justify at 2-5 in the morning line.

The stakes race is the $100,000 Sensational Star Stakes for Cal-breds 4 and up, running 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside course. Maybe. The race will probably stay on the turf but it all depends on how much water is on the course and how long the rain lingers. But, it’s the only race down the hill.

Trainer Peter Miller has four horses in the race including favorite Richard’s Boy at 5-2. The second favorite is the star-crossed Masochistic, who is now in the care of Baffert. He finished a disappointing fifth in the California Cup Sprint as the heavy favorite. Masochistic is better known for being disqualified from second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint two years ago for a tiny drug positive.

SEVENTH RACE No. 5 Kochees (4-1)

Liked this older gelding last time so let's try him right back on the three-level raise for high-percentage trainer Jonathan Wong. He should get a good trip behind the leaders, likes the 7 furlong distance and may take to the (anticipated) wet track.

Saturday’s Result: Liberty Jack lacked the needed punch through the lane when finishing fourth in the 9th race.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com (here’s a video) and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart’s LA play of the day

SECOND RACE: No. 3 Very Thankful (5-2)

She is a 13-time winner who is the inside controlling speed under hot-riding apprentice Edgar Payeras. Mare easily outfinished prior $5,000 winner Freaky Moniqee when flashing solid early zip in last runnerup try at this 4-furlong distance. Back Street Cat, the 8-5 morning-line favorite, won a restricted $5,000 claimer in last and figures to get overbet while dropping to a lower $3,200 selling price while taking on tougher company.
