Racing! New set of steward’s rulings

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we delve into the case of who should pay for the Daily Racing Forms.

As you know, I love to peruse the stewards’ minutes to get the real inside of what’s going on at the race track. Well, last week’s had a good one. It seems as if Santa Anita is no longer providing the stewards with a copy of the Daily Racing Form because of cost.

Here’s the item under the title “Information loss.”

“Santa Anita Vice President, Racing & Racing Secretary Rick Hammerle told the Stewards that they would no longer receive copies of ‘The Daily Racing Form’. The Stronach Group CEO Tim Ritvo visited the Stewards yesterday and expressed concerns to the Stewards as to the expense of ‘The Daily Racing Form’. Records of the racing secretary and paymaster of purses may be substantiated by records of the Daily Racing Form or any other service recognized by the board as outlined in CHRB Rule #1610 (Official Records of Eligibility).”

Now, it’s tough to figure out which is more amusing. Is it Santa Anita, which can be exceedingly generous when dealing with people and charities, drawing a line in the sand over a little more than $30 a day in Daily Racing Form costs? (That’s figuring four copies.) Or, is it the stewards being so petty as to put the fact they are no longer getting free Daily Racing Forms in a report that, in theory, goes to Gov. Jerry Brown?

So, what should we do? Well, most assuredly nothing. But, if we were to start a GoFundMe to cover the DRF costs, would it be for Santa Anita or the CHRB?

Need your help. I need you to channel your inner mirth and come up with some funny reasons to do a GoFundMe. So, complete this sentence:

Santa Anita or the CHRB (just pick one) should get a GoFundMe account started because …

Now, I’m not looking for the vile that some of you hit me with on a daily basis but I’m guessing there will be some degree of sarcasm. And hopefully, some really funny lines. Include your name and if I get enough good ones, I’ll report back to you in a day or two. Send to johnacherwa@gmail.com.

Now on to the stewards’ rulings of the week.

--Trainers Bobby Wayne Grayson, Sr. and Val Brinkerhoff were both fined $1,000 for a claiming violation. At issue was that Grayson claimed Arch Prince from Brinkerhoff on July 26 at Del Mar and then a short time later the horse was back in the Brinkerhoff barn. It was Grayson’s position that it was not a protection claim and even though some of the money used for the claim came from his son, Bobby Wayne Grayson, Jr., he was buying the horse for himself. Grayson, Jr. is a client of Brinkerhoff. According to the stewards’ minutes, “Exercise rider [Marc] Witkowski, who led the horse back to Brinkerhoff’s barn, testified that he was contacted by a man named Abel, who works for Brinkerhoff, and was asked to pick up the horse from the detention barn and take it to the Brinkerhoff barn.”

--Jockey John Jude was fined $100 for using the riding crop more than three times while aboard Family Rules at Los Alamitos on Sept. 23. The horse finished fourth.

--Agent Brad Pegram was fined $200 for failure to conduct business in a proper manner. On Sept. 28 at Santa Anita, Pegram agreed to have jockey Drayden Van Dyke ride two horses in the fourth race—KP Pergoliscious for trainer Jeff Mullins and Mongolian Window for trainer Peter Miller. Van Dyke did not ride either horse. KP Pergoliscious was scratched and Mongolian Window finished ninth.

--Jockey Drayden Van Dyke was suspended three days (Oct. 6, 7, 8) for interference in the stretch. Van Dyke was aboard Captivate in the eighth race on Sept. 28 and the stewards contended his horse did not maintain a straight course in the stretch. Captivate was disqualified to second. Van Dyke has filed an appeal and is riding this weekend at Santa Anita and Keeneland (Sunday).

--Jockey Ruben Fuentes is suspended for three days (Oct. 6, 7, 8) for interference in the stretch. Fuentes was aboard Gray Admiral in the first race on Sept. 28 and the stewards contended his horse altered course without sufficient clearance and bumped into Iron Alex. Gray Admiral was disqualified from the win and placed fourth. Fuentes is not riding this weekend.

--Jockey Heriberto Figueroa withdrew his appeal for a suspension at Del Mar. He will now serve those days on Oct. 7, 8, 12.

--Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was fined $200 for having improper shoes on Flying Scotsman on Sept. 29. Horseshoe inspector Victor Tovar filed down the horse’s toe grabs so it would comply with Santa Anita’s turf shoe rules. Flying Scotsman won the race.

Santa Anita review

In the first stake of the day, the $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes, Its Gonna Hurt made a little history by being the first winner of a five furlong on the turf stakes race at Santa Anita. This new distance on the grass was added this meeting.

Its Gonna Hurt broke nicely on the rail and was never headed despite some pressure in the stretch. The field finished 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Doesn’t happen often. Its Gonna Hurt paid $18.60, $9.40 and $5.80. Whooping Jay finished second and Mae Never No, who we mistakenly identified as a male in Saturday’s newsletter, finished third.

“I told him [jockey Tiago Pereira] he didn’t have to be [in front],” said winning trainer Brian Koriner. “I said you can lay right behind them. He didn’t break on top, but the horse dragged him right up there. There was nothing he could do. The horse was just way quicker than they were. He went 44 flat but he was draggin' him all the way.”

Up next was the Grade 1 $300,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes going six furlongs. Roy H mastered the six-horse field moving to even at the top of the stretch and then motoring to the front and winning by 2 ¾ lengths. This sets him up to try and win his second straight Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Roy H paid $4.00, $2.80 and $2.10. Distinctive B was second and Ransom the Moon was third.

“This is the Roy H I’ve been waiting to see all year,” said winning trainer Peter Miller. “It looked like Distinctive B was the speed. Drayden [Van Dyke] rode a perfect race and Distinctive B ran his eyeballs out, he ran super, but Roy H just ran phenomenal. He’s a great horse and I hope we springboard to the Breeders’ Cup.

“The way Distinctive B ran today I think he might have won that race at Keeneland I entered him in [Friday]. But this was more money, we didn’t have to ship him, and I kind of wanted a target for Roy so it worked out well.”

Paco Lopez was the winning jockey.

The final stake of the day was Grade 2 $200,000 City of Hope Mile on the turf. Sharp Samurai won by the smallest of margins, a nose, digging in the final strides to just edge out Fly to Mars. Winning jockey Gary Stevens even won despite losing his stick down the stretch.

Sharp Samurai paid $4.40, $2.60 and $2.40. Oho finished third.

“In the stretch, I pulled my stick through with my left hand, used it once, he responded and we were head and head with Flavien [Prat] and Fly to Mars,” Stevens said. “I went up to use it again, and Flavien was coming down with his at the same time, hit my hand, and I lost it way outside of the sixteenth pole.

“It was close and the credit goes to the other horse. My horse was game, Flavien’s horse was game. It was close.”

Mark Glatt was the winning trainer.

Santa Anita preview

Santa Anita’s 10-race Sunday card is not the last of the week as they have an extra day of racing on Monday. First post is 12:30 p.m. There are four turf races but six of the races are written for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. There are two stakes, one of them graded.

The fifth race is the Grade 3 $100,000 L.A. Woman Stakes for fillies and mares going 6 ½ furlongs on the dirt. It’s getting to be a trend but it’s yet another stakes race with a small field. There are five horses entered.

The favorite, at 8-5, is Anonymity, a lightly raced 4-year-old, has won three of her five races and finished second in the other one. She’s been the below even-money favorite her last four races. Richard Mandella is the trainer and Flavien Prat will ride.

A close second choice is Yuvetsi at 2-1. She has won three of seven this year including two of her last three. She’s been running against better competition and even finished fourth in the Grade 1 Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar., John Sadler is the trainer and Tyler Baze rides. Post is about 2:45 p.m.

The other stake is the $70,000 Swingtime Stakes for fillies and mares going one mile on the turf. Fahan Mura is the favorite at 3-1. There are 11 horses entered with two also eligibles. It’s the last race on the card.

Here are the field sizes, in order: 6, 6, 7, 9, 5, 8, 11(3 also eligibles), 9, 7, 11 (2 AE).

Bob Ike’s SA play of the day

TENTH RACE: No. 9 Cordiality (7-2)

Hard-knocking mare from the Mark Glatt stable comes off a sharp win vs. Cal-breds and might be able to win right back in this restricted turf stakes. She will get first run at the pacesetter and has a good record over the course and at this distance.

Saturday’s result: Noble Contessa (10-1) lacked punch through the lane and finished off the board.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com (here's a video) and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Ed Burgart LA play of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 3 Harem Bar Cartel (7-2)

Trainer Danny Montes adds the flipping halter for this 2-year-old gelding who ran much better than his last eighth-place trial outing indicates when he broke off balance with the ground coming out from under him at the start. After falling behind horses, jockey Saul Ramirez guided the gelding to the outside where he showed interest too late. He won his prior two Oregon outs and benefits by a local race which main rivals Elite Prize and Femme Fatale lack.
