Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth make up, but where’s the helmet?
Tony Stewart said he reached a truce with rival NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth after last weekend, when their scuffle on the race track prompted an angry Stewart to hurl his helmet at Kenseth’s car.
But apparently the helmet hasn’t been seen since.
“For some reason it’s MIA,” or missing in action, Stewart told reporters Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, site of the next Sprint Cup Series race Sunday.
Asked what he would do with the helmet if he had it, Stewart replied, “Charity auction, if I get it back. There have been a lot of charities that have asked to have that for an aution right now.”
Stewart, the reigning Cup champion, threw his helmet after his No. 14 Chevrolet tangled with the No. 17 Ford driven by Kenseth last Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee.
Immediately after the incident, Stewart said of Kenseth: “I’m going to run over him every chance I’ve got from now until the end of the year.”
But on Friday, Stewart said “we are fine. We have too much to do the last 10 weeks [of the season] to be worrying about each other.”
[Update, 5:15 p.m.: Stewart then went out and won the pole position for Sunday’s race with an average speed of 186.122 mph on the 1.5-mile Atlanta oval. Kenseth qualified fourth.]
