Adrian Peterson to sign a one-year deal with the Redskins

Free agent running back Adrian Peterson will sign a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins, according to multiple media reports.

Peterson, the 2012 league MVP who has led the NFL in rushing three times, tried out for the Redskins on Monday after the team lost three running backs — Derrius Guice, Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall — to injuries in its two preseason games.

Peterson, 33, is not expected to be a starter for the Redskins — Rob Kelly is said to have a lock on that job.

“We’ve had very [unlucky] situations with our running backs,” Gruden said. “If something else happens, we are going be really, really, really thin. We want to make sure we’re covering all our bases right now.”

With 12,276 career yards, Peterson ranks 12th in NFL history and needs 37 more to move past Jim Brown into the top 10. He spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings, then split last season between the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.
