Ravens sign Brandon Stokley, agree to deal with Dallas Clark

The Baltimore Ravens bolstered their receiving corps, agreeing in principle to a contract with tight end Dallas Clark,/b> and signing wideout Brandon Stokley to a one-year contract.

The team announced the deals Sunday.

The Ravens lost top tight end Dennis Pitta to a season-ending hip injury early in training camp, and Ed Dickson, the player being counted on to replace him, is sidelined by a partially torn hamstring.

The 34-year old Clark has been one of the more productive tight ends in the NFL during the last decade. He played last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after nine seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.

The 37-year old Stokley, who was drafted by the Ravens in 1999, has also played for the Colts, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks and New York Giants.

Browns CEO critical of Kosar

Browns Chief Executive Joe Banner called former Cleveland quarterback Bernie Kosar’s on-air criticism of the St. Louis Rams “unprofessional.”

During the TV broadcast of Thursday night’s exhibition opener, Kosar, working as an analyst, made brutal comments about Rams third-string quarterback Kellen Clemens and the Rams receivers.

Banner said the Browns “don’t condone the personal and unprofessional approach that Bernie took with some of his comments during the broadcast.” Banner said Kosar has been spoken to and “we would expect the situation is resolved moving forward.”

The Browns said Kosar called Rams Coach Jeff Fisher personally and apologized Sunday.

Fisher said Saturday that he had lost a lot of respect for Kosar, who has not been removed from his commentating job and is expected to be in the booth Thursday night when the Browns play host to the Chicago Bears.

Manuel is solid for Bills

Rookie EJ Manuel threw for 107 yards and broke a tie with a 17-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds left in the first half to lead the Buffalo Bills past the host Indianapolis Colts, 44-20.

Manuel was solid, not spectacular in his preseason debut. He completed 16 of 21 passes with a quarterback rating of 102.6 and wasn’t sacked though he was credited with a fumble after botching a handoff to C.J. Spiller, which led to an Indianapolis field goal.

Manuel played his best on the final drive of the first half when he was nine for 10 for 68 yards as most of the Bills’ starters continued to play against a Colts defense full of backups. The scoring pass to Dorin Dickerson gave Buffalo its first lead.

Quarterback Andrew Luck played only two series for the Colts and didn’t produce a scoring drive.

Fisher hurts shoulder

The Kansas City Chiefs returned to practice without right tackle Eric Fisher, the No. 1 overall pick who hurt his right shoulder in their preseason opener.

Fisher also hurt his left thumb Friday night in New Orleans, briefly leaving the sideline to get it taped up. But Coach Andy Reid said after the team returned to training camp Sunday that Fisher missed practice because of a separate shoulder injury.

Fisher started at right tackle against the Saints after the Chiefs made the former Central Michigan star the top pick in the draft over Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel.

While it’s clear that Fisher has uncanny athleticism for a man his size, the 6-foot-7, 306-pound rookie has struggled to get acclimated to life in the NFL. He’s been beaten often by pass rushers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in one-on-one drills, and more than once quarterback Alex Smith has had to scramble during 11-on-11 sessions of practice.

Reid has acknowledged that Fisher is going through some growing pains, just like any first-year player, and that his progress in the preseason will be crucial to the offense’s success.

The New York Jets released running back John Griffin with an injury, and signed running back Kahlil Bell and wide receiver Rahsaan Vaughn. Griffin broke his left leg in the team’s 26-17 loss to Detroit on Friday night, when he was taken down on a horse-collar tackle by Travis Lewis. ... Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith fully participated in practice despite a sore right ankle that shortened his NFL debut at Detroit. Smith twisted the ankle on a play in the third quarter, but he says an X-ray and MRI exam revealed “great results” and calls it a “little ankle injury.” ... Minnesota Vikings rookie defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd said an MRI exam Sunday showed no damage to his left knee. Coach Leslie Frazier wanted the MRI because Floyd felt soreness and to “err on the side of caution” after the first-round draft pick out of Florida was injured in the second quarter of a 27-13 exhibition loss to the Houston Texans on Friday night. ... The Tennessee Titans waived safety Robert Johnson after he failed a physical. ... The Chicago Bears signed rookie long snapper Brandon Hartson and veteran safety Derrick Martin. ... The Denver Broncos and punter Britton Colquitt agreed on a three-year contract extension through 2016.
