New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is out for the season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his right knee Sunday night during the team’s 27-0 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cruz, a fifth-year veteran, underwent what the team said was successful surgery Monday afternoon. The operation was performed by team physician Dr. Russell Warren at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

The 27-year-old Cruz, a Pro Bowl pick in 2012, was hurt in the third quarter as he tried to catch a fourth-down pass in the end zone with the Giants trailing 20-0. He grabbed his knee and was crying as he was carted off the field. There was no contact on the play.

The New York Jets placed starting cornerback Dee Milliner and left guard Brian Winters on season-ending injured reserve, Milliner because of a torn right Achilles’ tendon, Winters with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Both will need surgery, the team said. The Jets signed cornerback Josh Thomas to take Milliner’s roster spot and claimed offensive lineman Wesley Johnson off waivers from Pittsburgh.

Sproles’ injury not serious

Philadelphia running back Darren Sproles sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee Sunday during the Eagles’ win over the Giants, but the injury is not considered serious and Coach Chip Kelly said he doesn’t expect Sproles to miss much time, if any. The Eagles have a bye this week and don’t play again until Oct. 26 at Arizona.

Broncos’ Trevathan sidelined

Denver linebacker Danny Trevathan has another fracture near his left kneecap and is expected to miss several weeks. He was hurt Sunday against the Jets in his second game back from a broken bone below the left kneecap.
