Sochi Olympics officials reiterate they are handling the warm weather

SOCHI, Russia -- Weather continues to be an issue at the 2014 Sochi Olympics -- and officials continue to say that they have the matter under control.

“Yes, we do have warm days,” said Aleksandra Kosterina, a spokeswoman for the organizing committee. “At the same time, we do have strong contingency plans in place.”

Workers have treated snow with salt and water. They have used dry ice to cool the aerials course. Snowfall from last winter, stored over the summer beneath thermal blankets, was used to prepare for competitions.

Though the men’s super combined Alpine skiing was moved to an earlier time on Friday morning, Kosterina said that dozens of events were rescheduled at Calgary in 1988.

“So weather is a thing at the Winter Games,” she said.

There was also a question about the number of slips and falls in cross-country and biathlon events.

“The track is exciting,” Kosterina said, adding: “The conditions of the competition are equal for all of the athletes.”

Forecasts have called for the possiblity of snow in coming days.
