CHARLEVOIX — Andrew Plude, Andrew Potter and Sawyer Russell combined to score 44 points Tuesday as Charlevoix handed Suttons Bay its first loss of the season, 64-55, in a non-league boys’ basketball game.
The win lifted Charlevoix to 4-2, while Suttons Bay is 4-1. The Rayders defeated Kalkaska, 80-47, in their last start on Dec. 20.
“With the lack of experience we have, it was nice to go into the (Christmas) break on a good note and it’s nice to come out of the break with a win,” Charlevoix coach Adam Wood said. “It’s good for our mentality going into Friday.”
The Rayders return to Lake Michigan Conference action on Friday when they go to Elk Rapids, 3-2. Both teams are 1-1 in the league.
Plude finished with a game-high 20 points, Potter added 13 and Russell had 11 to lead the Rayders past Suttons Bay.
Charlevoix jumped to an 18-10 first-quarter lead, was up 31-23 at halftime, and maintained a 49-39 advantage after three quarters.
“I thought we got off to a good start,” Wood said. “It was a good pace, but I’m not sure if it was (that we were) coming off the break, but we had a hard time putting the game away.
They (Suttons Bay) kept pushing hard and we had some defensive lapses. I’m just hoping it was us coming off the break and just getting our legs back under us.”
Russell finished with eight rebounds, Plude added seven, and Potter dished out six assists.
Greg Banks scored 15 points and Aaron Orban added 13 for Suttons Bay.
Charlevoix won the JV game, 67-31. For the Rayders, Justin Pearl had 15 points, while Zach Hankins added 12, and Shane Sutherland finished with 10.
SKI VALLEY
Pellston 84, Mancelona 49
MANCELONA — Christopher Hass tossed in 39 points and Andy Hamlin added 22 as the Hornets rolled to a Ski Valley Conference win to remain perfect on the season.
Hamlin, who matched his season-high point total, also hauled down 15 rebounds as Pellston improved to 5-0 overall, 3-0 Ski Valley.
Max Ketterer added 10 points and six rebounds for the Hornets, and Hass had six rebounds, six assists and six steals.
Pellston led, 20-12, after one quarter, then outscored the Ironmen, 27-10, in the second for a comfortable 47-22 halftime cushion.
“It all came down to our defense, our defense created a lot of turnovers,” Pellston coach Cliff Hass said.
Christopher Hass scored nine of his points in the second quarter, while Hamlin and Ketterer added six apiece in the stanza.
