Sophomore Central Michigan University guard Kerby Tamm played in the Mid American Conference tournament championship game as the Chippewa women picked up an 86-68 win over Akron.
Tamm, a 2011 Petoskey grad, played six minutes and scored four points for the Chippewas in a quarterfinal game against Bowling Green in which the Chippewas won, 81-48.
Tamm has played in 30 games this season for Central, starting 10 while connecting on 31-of-72 3-point field goals, good for second on the team.
The Chippewas open the NCAA Division I tournament on Saturday, March 23, in Columbus, Ohio, against Oklahoma, 22-10.
CMU finished the regular season at 21-11 overall, 12-4 in the MAC.
— Grand Valley State University No. 4 singles tennis player Kali Phillips, a 2011 Petoskey grad, defeated Lewis (Ill.) University’s Brianna Markgraf, 6-2, 6-3, during a non-league match for the Lakers women’s tennis team.
Grand Valley won the non-league team match, 6-3.
Phillips is 21-1 overall, 19-0 in dual competition this season.
— Relief pitcher Scott Morse threw 1 1/3 inning for Concordia University during a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Confernce win over Northwestern Ohio, 11-10.
Morse, a 2012 Harbor Springs grad, allowed no runs on two hits while walking one and struck out one.
Morse is 1-1 in four appearances spanning four innings — all in relief — while allowing seven hits, two walks, and two strike outs for the Cardinals.
Freshman Hunter Stinger made a plate appearence for Concodia during an 11-0 loss to Northwestern Ohio.
Stinger, a 2012 Petoskey grad, has appeared in five games and started one with five at-bats while collecting two hits and has scored two runs.
Concordia is 3-11 overall, 2-2 in the WHAC.
— Kevin Thompson, a 2010 Petoskey grad, has made one appearence on the mound for Alma College as he pitched a complete game shutout in leading the Scots to a 7-0 win over Lyndon State (Vt.) College. Thompson allowed three hits, walked one and struck out five during the Scots’ spring break trip to Florida last month. Kolbi Shumaker, a 2011 Boyne City grad, pitched one inning and allowed two runs, none earned, on two hits for the Scots durning a non-league loss, 11-1, against Loras (Iowa) College.
Alma is 4-5 overall.
— Junior midfielder Rachel Gutowski scored four goals for Wilmington (Ohio) College during a non-league lacrosse loss to DePauw, 26-6. Gutowski, a Petoskey grad, leads the Quakers with six goals and two assists while taking 16 shots including 13 on goal over four games all as starter.
Wilmington is 0-4 overall.
— Senior outfielder/pinch-hitter Steven Kolb has one hit and walked once in two plate appearances for Spring Arbor University during a spring break trip win, 1-0, over Ave Maria (Fla.) University.
Kolb, a Inland Lakes grad, has five hits in 18 at-bats, four walks and was hit-by-a-pitch in eight games this season for the Cougars.
Spring Arbor is 4-9 overall.
— Dennis Kan, a 2011 Petoskey grad, recorded one at-bat for Saginaw Valley State in a 6-3 loss to Tiffin (Ohio) University during the Cardinals spring break trip. Kan has one hit in two official at-bats this season while playing in three games.
SVSU is 2-8 overall.
