— The Petoskey High School skiing team swept a tri-meet with Gaylord and Grayling. For the Northmen boys, Dan Bates had an overall time of 74.3 to place in first and teammate Tim Parsons was second.
For the Petoskey girls, Carla Howard’s overall time of 93.5, would net a second place finish while Patti Phiilips finished in fifth.
— The Petoskey boys’ basketball team fell to Cadillac, 57-50. Terry Ellis led the Northmen with 16 points.
— In the Northern Michigan Class C Conference, Pellston remained undefeated with a 68-48 win over East Jordan. The Hornets were led by Mike Thompson with 24 points.
Harbor Springs remained a game behind with a win over Gaylord, 55-40. Paul Ranney paced the Rams with a game-high 22 points. John Pearl scored 14 points to lead Charlevoix to a 70-31 win over Mancelona.
— The Petoskey boys’ basketball team fell at the buzzer, 66-65, to Cheboygan despite Mike Davies scoring 20 points and Archie Kiogima adding 17 points. Roger Lafrinere hit the game winning basket for the Chiefs.
— Inland Lakes fell to Bellaire, 67-65, in overtime in a boys game. Randy August would lead the Bulldogs with 29 points while Randy Pollard added 14.
— Ross Blumke scored 27 points and Dwayne Armock added 14 as Class D No. 8 ranked Alanson ran past Wolverine, 104-39.
Also, Bob Darrow scored 19 points for Mackinaw City during a 70-44 win over Boyne Falls.
— Todd VandenBrink’s lay in with four seconds left in regulation help lead the Petoskey boys’ basketball team over Gaylord, 56-55.
“The kids were excited to get the win after losing some close ones this season,” Petoskey coach Paul VanWagoner said. Later in the week the Northmen lost to Dan Majerle and the Traverse City Trojans, 74-59.
— Charlevoix improved to 10-0 after defeating St. Igance, 63-56, to take sole possession of the Michigan-Huron Shores Conference lead.
Charlevoix’s George Smith grabbed 13 rebounds, Craig Klooster added eight, Chris Putman had seven and Doug Sloan added six.
— Harbor Springs fell to Mancelona, 46-44. Ernie Hartzell scored 27 points for the Rams.
— Herbie Shaw, Emily Wynn and Casey Mckinney of the Petoskey Speed Skating Club won their divisions of the Petoskey Invitational at the Petoskey Winter Sport Park.
Danike Harrison and Aaron Brock placed second in their division.
— Dave Brines, the Petoskey High School girls’ track coach, won Class B Coach of the Year honors awarded by the Michigan Track Coaches Association.
“I was lucky, we have some good athletes and I have a good assistant coach,” Brines said.
— Petoskey High School announced the schedule for the first season of girls’ varsity soccer. The team was coached by Julie Jacobson.
The 10 game schedule would include Birmingham Marion and Saginaw Lutheran plus a four-team home invitational.
— The Petoskey boys’ basketball team picked up a Big North Conference win over Sault Ste. Marie, 57-32, and a non league win over Boyne City, 51-41, during the same week.
— Charlevoix’s 38-game regular season winning streak and 27 straight in the Lake Michigan Conference was snapped by Elk Rapids, 64-57. The Rayders were led by Scott Friske with 19 points.
Boyne City, led by Beau Detcher with 15 points, got by T.C. St. Francis, 37-32, to end a six-game losing streak.
— Harbor Light won a battle of Northern Lakes undefeated teams with a 73-47 win over Boyne Falls. The Swordsmen were led by Dean Cosens with 30 points and Jason Roussin collected 15 rebounds.
