Prep soccer: Swordsmen roll in district opener

The Swordsmen, 7-11-1, will play at Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in a district semifinal. Harbor Springs and Lincoln-Alcona meet in the second semifinal at 4:30 p.m.
The district final is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at NMCA.
Young Min, Kirk Muller, James Skop and Michael Blair also scored, while Min, Muller, Daniel Klevorn and Lucas Matthews each had an assist. Cal Ortlieb, Michael Muller and Leo Ocanas were Harbor Light’s defensive standouts, coach Pat Collins said.
“We were a little slow in the first half,” Collins said. “But we picked it up and played much better soccer in the second. We have played better over the past couple of weeks. We have made noticeable improvements.”
Matthews and Jake Ellis shared the shutout in goal.
Bellaire 3, Charlevoix 0
BELLAIRE — The Eagles ended Charlevoix’s season in a Division IV district quarterfinal.
“We played aggressive tonight,” Charlevoix coach John Boss said. “Tonight was our best game of the season, and you could see the improvement from where we were at the beginning of the season.”
Matt Batdorff made 15 saves in goal for the Rayders, while Nick Snabes was a standout in the midfield, Boss said.
The Eagles advance to play Suttons Bay in a Wednesday district semifinal at the Coast Guard fields in Traverse City. The Norse advanced with a 2-1 victory over Leland.
The Petoskey High School boys’ soccer team will play West Branch Ogemaw Heights today, Tuesday, in a Division II district opener at 4 p.m. at the Click Road Soccer Complex.
The winner advances to play Gaylord in a semifinal game on Thursday, Oct. 20. If Petoskey wins today, Thursday’s game will be played at Click. The start time is to be announced.
In Tuesday’s other games in the district, Cadillac plays host to Mount Pleasant, and Bay City John Glenn entertains Bay City Western. Those two winners will meet on Thursday at a site and start time to be determined.
Thursday’s winners advance to the district title game on Saturday, Oct. 22. That game will be played at the school that emerges from the side of the bracket involving Cadillac, Mount Pleasant and the two Bay City schools.
Cadillac is the defending district champion.
The start time for the final is to be determined.
The district champion advances to the regional at Fenton, where it will play a semifinal game on Tuesday, Oct. 25, against the champion of the Bloomfield Hills Lahser district.
