Running back Reggie Bush, the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner from USC, was put on injured reserve Wednesday by the New Orleans Saints because of a sprained left knee.

When this season ends, the third-year pro will have sat out 10 games in the last two years because of knee injuries.

Bush hasn’t produced 1,000 yards in a season since finishing with 1,307 in his rookie year, which was also the last time the Saints made the playoffs.

“Certainly, expectations have probably been higher on him than any guy, maybe in the history of the league coming in,” quarterback Drew Brees said.

“He continues to get better, a little bit better every day, and I think that needs to be his mind-set. Just forget what people think, media or otherwise, and just worry about getting better every day and worry about what you need to do to help this team win.”

Jones is back

Adam “Pacman” Jones, thought to be out for the season because of a neck injury, returned to practice and is expected to play for the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night against the Baltimore Ravens, at cornerback and returning kicks, after sitting out only one game.

Coach Wade Phillips said the herniated disk discovered last week has healed, perhaps because Jones already had the problem and it was only aggravated by a hit he took on Dec. 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That was his first game back with the Cowboys after being suspended for six games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Jacobs aims to play

Running back Brandon Jacobs practiced and said he would forcefully make his case to be in the New York Giants’ lineup against the Carolina Panthers.

Jacobs, who has rushed for 1,002 yards and 12 touchdowns, sat out against Dallas on Sunday after aggravating his left knee against the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 7.

Harrison to sit out

Indianapolis Colts receiver Marvin Harrison will sit out tonight’s game at Jacksonville because of an apparent hamstring injury.

A team spokesman said that Harrison, who has been listed on this week’s practice report with a knee injury, did not travel with the team.

Coach Tony Dungy said that Harrison “actually has a hamstring issue” and underwent an MRI exam.

Ownership settled

NFL owners approved by a 31-0 vote a restructured ownership plan in which Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney and his son, team President Art Rooney II, will buy most of the shares owned by other family members. They will own 30% of the club, meeting a league requirement on the equity on controlling ownership.
