Player recovering
In a scene that has become disturbingly familiar in the Mojave Desert this season, a player had to be airlifted to a hospital Friday night.
Mojave junior running back Darren Johnson was transported to a Bakersfield hospital at halftime of the Mustangs' home game against Yermo Silver Valley after falling unconscious late in the second quarter, Mojave Coach Larry Satterfield said. The game was called with Silver Valley leading, 21-0.
Johnson later regained consciousness and was released from the hospital Saturday, Satterfield said. Coaches initially feared that Johnson had suffered a serious injury after taking a vicious hit on a running play, but it turned out he was suffering from low blood sugar.
"He's going to be fine," Satterfield said. "We're thankful that he's well and everything's OK."
Boron sophomore running back and safety Vinnie Rodriguez died Sept. 16 from head injuries suffered in a game four days earlier.
In the case of both players, the ambulance assigned to the game was called away to another emergency.
"It might be something we have to look at," Satterfield said of the absence of emergency personnel.
