Junior welterweights Johan Perez and Steve “Two Pounds” Forbes will square off Saturday night in the premier fight of the first Golden Boy Boxing Series event at BB&T Center, with three more boxing events coming in the next 12 months.
The bout between the Venezuelan Perez and former World Champion Forbes is scheduled for 10 rounds.
“Hopefully it’ll be a one-sided fight,” Forbes told reporters at Friday’s weigh-in, at which former Heavyweight World Champion Evander Holyfield was a special guest. “I think it’ll be good for a few rounds and then my experience will take over.
The fights on the undercard, which will start at 7 p.m., a half hour after doors open for the event, feature four local boxers – Hollywood’s Tracy Rollins, Fort Lauderdale’s Larry Yanez, Miami’s John Wampash and Homestead's Jose Angel Sanchez.
Yanez (3-3-1) and Wampash (1-7-1, 1 KO) will square off in a lightweight fight while Rollins (2-0, 1 KO) will take on Sanchez in Sanchez's pro debut. Both are scheduled for four rounds.
Meanwhile, Miami resident Yudel Johnson (12-1, 8 KO’s), a 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist for Cuba, will take on Dashon Johnson in an eight-round junior middleweight fight.
Also Saturday night, Thomas Williams (11-0, 8 KO’s), one of the top prospects in the light heavyweight division, will face Jason Smith (8-1, 6 KO’s) in the 10-round co-main event and Terrell Gausha (1-0, 1 KO), who was 1-1 for USA at the 2012 London Olympics, will take on Kenneth Schmitz (2-4, 1 KO) in a four-round fight.
In addition to Saturday’s event, Golden Boy Boxing Series will hold live boxing events at the BB&T Center on June 1, 2013, Oct. 12, 2013 and Jan. 14, 2014.
