Chivas USA plays to draw in Houston

HOUSTON -- Chivas USA’s Brad Guzan had five saves and Houston’s Pat Onstad made three as the two teams played to a scoreless tie Saturday night.

Before the game, Houston received its championship rings for winning the MLS Cup championship. The two teams, who entered the game first and second in the league in fouls, tied the MLS season-high with eight yellow cards and one red card.

Referee Jozef Batko whistled four yellows on Houston (0-2-4) and four yellows and a red on Chivas USA (1-3-2).

Dwayne De Rosario, Patrick Ianni, Stuart Holden and Bobby Boswell were issued yellows for Houston, and Sacha Kljestan, Shavar Thomas, Maykel Galindo and Jonathan Bornstein were carded for Chivas USA. Claudio Suarez was ejected with a red card in the 82nd minute.

Corey Ashe had a chance to give Houston the lead in the 88th minute, but his shot from the left box was stopped by Guzan.

In a scary moment, Chivas USA’s Lawson Vaughn was kicked in the face by De Rosario in the ninth minute and left with a broken nose and a cut on his face. He will be re-evaluated today.
