Chris Pontius scored in stoppage time, lifting D.C. United to a 1-0 victory over the L.A. Galaxy on Saturday.

Nick DeLeon made a series of nifty moves on the right wing, and then found Pontius at the far side of the 6-yard box. Pontius went low to head it past an outstretched Brian Rowe in the third extra minute for D.C. United (2-1-0).

A scoreless first half was not without chances. Not quite eight minutes in, the Galaxy’s Mika Vayrynen curled a free just kick inches wide. Then just before half, United keeper Bill Hamid made a diving save on Alan Gordon’s header.

L.A.’s Leonardo was close to breaking the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute but missed just wide at the far post.

The Galaxy (1-1-2) were awarded a free kick at the top of the box at the 80 minute mark, but Hamid (five saves) gobbled up Jose Villarreal’s low shot easily.
