Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez has been recalled by the U.S. national soccer team for the knockout round of the Gold Cup, which begins this weekend when the U.S. meets El Salvador in Baltimore.

Because Gonzalez played in last month’s World Cup qualifiers he, like many other players on that roster, was left off the Gold Cup team. But after group play managers of the eight surviving countries are permitted to make up to four changes to their team and U.S. Coach Juergen Klinsmann called up Gonzalez and his partner in central defense, Matt Besler of Sporting Kansas City.

Also joining the U.S. on Sunday will be forwards Eddie Johnson, of the Seattle Sounders, and Alan Gordon of the San Jose Earthquakes.

Released from the team was defender Corey Ashe of the Houston Dynamo and defender Oguchi Onyewu of Sporting Lisbon as well as Tijuana forward Herculez Gomez and Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney.

The Galaxy is expected to have Gonzalez available for this weekend’s Major League Soccer game with Vancouver, but if the U.S. reaches the Gold Cup final in Chicago on July 28 Gonzalez would miss the Galaxy’s July 27 game in Colorado.

Two-time defending tournament champion Mexico, which meets Trinidad and Tobago in its quarterfinal Saturday in Atlanta, made one change, dropping Monterrey midfielder Darvin Chavez and replacing him with Morelia’s Jose Maria Cardenas.
