Going into the World Cup, neither team figured to be finishing the tournament in the third-place game. Germany, the world’s No. 1 team, was expected to make the final, and England, which had never advanced beyond the quarterfinals, was expected to be home by now.

As things turned out, England actually came closer to making the title game, with Laura Bassett’s freakish own goal in stoppage time providing Japan with a 2-1 win in the semifinal. A devastated Bassett had to be helped off the field by teammates, and all eyes are likely to be back on her in this game, given the outpouring of support she’s received on social media.
