Angels sign top draft pick Hunter Green
The Angels have reached agreement on a $942,000 deal with left-hander Hunter Green, the team’s top pick in this month’s draft.
Green, 17, was on the field at Angel Stadium before Saturday’s game and is expected to report to the team’s training complex in Arizona this week.
Green had 110 strikeouts and a 0.14 earned-run average in 51 innings at Warren East High in Bowling Green, Ky., this season. The Angels, who did not have a first-round pick in this year’s draft, took Green with the 59th selection near the end of the second round.
In addition to the money, which matches the value the commissioner’s office has assigned to that slot in the draft, Green is also guaranteed an invitation to big league camp in spring training.
Green, 6 feet 4 and 180 pounds, has a fastball that touches 95 mph and is developing a curveball and changeup that scouts believe could become plus pitches.
