The Rams on Tuesday waived wide receiver Stedman Bailey, who is recovering from gunshot wounds to the head suffered last year, but Bailey is expected to return to the team in some capacity.

Bailey, 25, has been in Oxnard for off-season workouts and organized team activities but he has not been cleared for football activities. He was waived with the non-football injury designation. The move removes him from the 90-man roster, and if he clears waivers he will return to the Rams, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Stedman has not been made available to the media. Coach Jeff Fisher is expected to address Bailey’s situation on Wednesday. The Rams resumed OTA workouts on Tuesday but the practice was not open to the media.

Last November, Bailey was shot twice while sitting in a car in Miami.

Fisher said in March that Bailey was “in the evaluation process, seeking numerous opinions from neurologists and the like. Just to see if he can not only play but continue with a rigorous physical rehab program that will put him in position to play. … As you can imagine, we don’t think there’s any history out there after the head wounds and all that.”

Last week, when asked about Bailey, Fisher said, “It’s been great to have him. He’s been in the meetings, been helping out.”

Bailey played in college at West Virginia and was a third-round pick by the Rams in 2013. He has 59 receptions, two for touchdowns, in 38 games.

The Rams also released defensive tackle Doug Worthington, receiver Kain Colter and linebacker Zack Hodges to make room for quarterback Dylan Thompson, running back Terrence Magee, defensive lineman Cam Thomas and tight end Benson Browne.
