Jered Weaver, Angels defeat Mariners, 6-4

KEY MOMENT: Angels pitcher Jered Weaver walked .153-hitting No. 9 batter Brad Miller to load the bases with two outs in the fourth inning and threw a fastball to the backstop for a wild pitch that allowed the Mariners to trim the lead to 4-3. But the right-hander gathered himself in time to induce James Jones to pop out to third, ending the inning.

AT THE PLATE: David Freese, C.J. Cron, Erick Aybar and Chris Iannetta doubled in a three-run second, the first time since an Aug. 21, 2007, game against the New York Yankees that the Angels had four doubles in an inning. Howie Kendrick’s double-play grounder plated a run in the fourth, Collin Cowgill doubled, took third on Kendrick’s groundout and scored on Mike Trout’s sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Cron hit a solo homer to left — his third of the season — in the eighth.

ON THE MOUND: Weaver wasn’t as dominant as he was for most of May, but he held Seattle to three runs and seven hits in six innings to improve to 6-3 with a 2.99 earned-run average on the season and 6-1 with a 2.01 ERA in his last eight starts. Joe Smith threw a scoreless eighth. Ernesto Frieri gave up an RBI single to Robinson Cano in the ninth but got Kyle Seager to fly to deep center with runners on first and third to end the game and notch his seventh save.

INJURED AGAIN: Sean Burnett’s year-long comeback from elbow surgery hit another snag when the left-hander, making his third appearance of the season, was pulled because of injury after getting Michael Saunders to pop out to shortstop to lead off the bottom of the seventh. He will go on the disabled list and was too distraught to talk after the game. Burnett was replaced by Fernando Salas, who gave up a single to Cano before getting Justin Smoak to ground into an inning-ending double play.

VOTES ARE IN: Albert Pujols was the second-leading vote-getter among first basemen, and Howie Kendrick was the fifth-leading vote-getter among second basemen in the first American League All-Star balloting update Tuesday.

EXTRA BASES: Manager Mike Scioscia said before the game that left-hander Wade LeBlanc, who was called up from triple-A Salt Lake on Sunday, would start Thursday night’s game, but after the game he said Matt Shoemaker could be recalled to make the start. … Josh Hamilton, slowed by a bone bruise in his left thumb, threw Tuesday and hopes to resume swinging a bat Wednesday.
