It’s official: The Yankees are the most-hated team in baseball — and the Dodgers aren’t far behind
America has spoken, and the New York Yankees are the country’s most-hated baseball team.
It’s no surprise that one of the most successful sports franchises in the world with 18 division titles, 40 American League pennants and 27 World Series championships — all Major League Baseball records — continues to be disliked by baseball fans.
FiveThirtyEight conducted a survey asking 989 self-described baseball fans from June 30 to July 8 across the U.S. which teams were their favorite and most hated. Because baseball fandom is regional, voters had a handful of beloved and begrudged teams.
Among the top most-hated teams in baseball, the Yankees earned a resounding 27% of the vote, followed by the Boston Red Sox with 10%, the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks, tied with 5% each, and the Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals, with 4% each.
Breaking it down regionally, the Yankees still got the least love in the West, with 26%, followed by the Dodgers at 12%, the Red Sox with 8%, the San Francisco Giants at 6% and the Oakland Athletics with 5%.
The Yankees earned the unwelcome distinction of being the most-hated team in each of the four regions surveyed.
On a brighter note, the Yankees also are America’s favorite team — but only by a small margin, with 10% of the vote. Next among fan favorites are the Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves, each sharing 8% of the vote, and the Dodgers and Giants, both with 5%.
Regionally in the West, the Giants edge out the Dodgers among fan faves, 15% to 13%, followed by the Seattle Mariners with 12%, the Diamondbacks with 7% and the Angels and Yankees, each sharing 6%.
One other thing to note: The teams in each region ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the most-liked and most-hated categories also ranked in the top 10 in the league’s attendance this season.
