Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall took a knee during the national anthem for the first eight games of the NFL season.

Now he’s decided it’s time to stand up.

Marshall did so during the anthem before the Broncos’ 30-20 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday night and said he will continue the practice for the rest of the season.

“I helped bring awareness to what [San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin] Kaepernick had started and it was time for me, not to move on but to stand up,” Marshall said after the game. “I'm still doing things.”

This season, Marshall has met with the Denver Police Department and donated money to youth organizations for every tackle he makes.

He announced his decision to start standing during the anthem again in an Instagram post before Sunday’s game, saying he’s pleased with the progress that has been made so far this season and he will continue his efforts in working toward more positive change.

“I’m encouraged with the many productive discussions and progress that has taken place as the Denver Police department has decided to review its use of force policy,” Marshall wrote. “I’m proud to have joined so many of my peers throughout sports who’ve also made their own statements. Going forward, I will be standing for the National Anthem — not because everything is perfect, or because I'm changing my stance on things. But because of my hope for what we can become.

“Just because I am standing doesn't mean the work will end. There’s much work to be done. I’ll continue to recognize and support organizations that are stepping up as leaders and making a real difference in our community, and I will do my part to be there for those in need.”
