Watch a bald eagle soar to freedom during an unplanned part of Dodgers’ July 4 celebration

The Dodgers celebrated our nation’s birthday Monday, in part by having a pair of bald eagles from the Los Angeles Zoo soar into Dodger Stadium before a game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The team tweeted out a photo of the event, along with the caption: “Baseball. Eagles. #FourthofJuly. AMERICA.”

Whoever wrote the tweet forgot to mention freedom – something one of the birds seemed to have on its mind.

Chinook, the male eagle, performed most of his flight according to script, flying around majestically and slowly descending as Ray Charles’ version of “America the Beautiful” played in the background.

But when it came time to return to his handler, Chinook had other ideas.

Instead of landing on his trainer’s arm, Chinook kept on flying – right through the open gate in center field and out of the stadium.

The zoo later tweeted that Chinook was found waiting by his handler’s van.

The zoo also noted that plenty of staff members were at the stadium in case such an event occurred.
