Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton eliminated; UC Santa Barbara still alive

Randy Batista’s two-out single brought Christopher Barr home for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, and Miami won the Coral Gables Regional by downing Long Beach State 9-8 on Sunday night.

Willie Abreu and Zack Collins homered for the Hurricanes (48-11), who led 8-1 after four innings and then found themselves scrambling to oust the Dirtbags. The Hurricanes will host Boston College in the Super Regionals next weekend.

Alex Muzzi drove in three runs and Jarren Duran scored three times for Long Beach State (38-22), which got six runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to tie the game. Miami and Boston College are both members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, but haven’t met since the Hurricanes swept a three-game series in 2014. Miami is 18-6 all-time against Boston College.

Long Beach State 5, Florida Atlantic 1: Daniel Jackson hit a three-run home run and finished with four RBIs for Long Beach State, which ousted Florida Atlantic from the Coral Gables, Fla., Regional of the NCAA baseball tournament with a 5-1 win on Sunday afternoon.

Jarren Duran, Garrett Hampson and Luke Rasmussen each had two hits for the Dirtbags (38-21), who will face Miami in the regional championship round on Sunday night. Long Beach State needs to beat Miami twice to advance.

Tanner Brown (8-4) allowed four hits and struck out seven in eight innings for Long Beach State. Brandon Rhodes (7-4) went the distance for Florida Atlantic (39-19), giving up 10 hits and striking out five.

UC Santa Barbara 5, Xavier 4: Clay Fisher hit a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning, and the Gauchos held off the Musketeers to advance to the Nashville Regional final.

Austin Bush, who beat Washington with a walk-off home run in the 14th inning of the regional opener, capped a three-run first inning with a solo shot for the Gauchos. The second-seeded Gauchos (39-18-1) added two more in the fourth thanks to Fisher, who also had an RBI triple in the first.

UC Santa Barbara, which advanced to Monday’s regional final, is trying to reach their first super regional under the current format.

Xavier (31-29) upset top-seeded Vanderbilt to advance and now will play Washington (33-22) on Sunday night in an elimination game. Right-hander Justin Kelly struck out seven over the final 2 2/3 innings, including striking out the side in the ninth, to close out the win for UC Santa Barbara.

Louisiana Tech 6, CS Fullerton 2: Cameron Linck pitched six solid innings to help the Bulldogs eliminate the Titans in the Starkville, Miss., Regional. Linck gave up two earned runs on four hits and a walk, striking out five.

Louisiana Tech (42-19) advances to play Mississippi State in the regional championship game later on Sunday. Louisiana Tech would have to beat Mississippi State twice — once on Sunday night and again on Monday — because of the regional’s double-elimination format.

Louisiana Tech built a 4-0 lead through five innings before Cal State Fullerton responded with two runs. But the Bulldogs added one run in the sixth and eighth innings to slowly pull away. Nate Harris threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the save. Cal State Fullerton (36-23) managed just four runs total in its three games during the regional.

Mississippi State 4, Louisiana Tech 0: Mississippi State beat Louisiana Tech to win the NCAA tournament’s Starkville Regional title on Sunday night. Zac Houston and Ryan Rigby combined to throw a two-hit shutout to lead the Bulldogs to the Super Regional round.

Xavier 7, Washington 5: Rylan Bannon drove in three runs, and fourth-seeded Xavier beat Washington Sunday night to stay alive in the Nashville Regional. The Musketeers (32-29) won their eighth in nine games while improving to 4-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Big East champs will play UC Santa Barbara on Monday needing two wins to advance to their first Super Regional. After losing 5-4 to UC Santa Barbara earlier Sunday, the Musketeers scored seven in their first three innings.

Minnesota 8, Wake Forest 3: Austin Athmann went 4 for 4 with two runs and Minnesota beat Wake Forest in an elimination game in the NCAA Tournament’s College Station Regional on Sunday. Minnesota blew open a close game with a four-run eighth inning.

Texas A&M 8, Minnesota 2: Joel Davis and Ryne Birk had two RBIs apiece, and Mark Ecker struck out the final four Minnesota batters to help Texas A&M beat the Gophers on Sunday night and win the NCAA Tournament’s College Station Regional. Texas A&M (48-14) took the lead on a two-run triple by Davis in the second inning.

Clemson 15, Western Carolina 3: Clemson pounds Western Carolina to stay alive in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers now must win twice against Oklahoma State to reach the super regional. Seth Beer hit his 18th homer this season, one of five blasts by the Tigers, which topped the Catamounts 24-10 on Friday night.

Oklahoma State 9, Clemson 2: Corey Hassel had a grand slam and Oklahoma State shut down Clemson for a second straight game to win Sunday night, advancing to the NCAA Tournament super regionals for the second time in three seasons. Hassel’s homer to left gave the Cowboys a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning and the Tigers could not respond. Oklahoma State defeated Clemson 12-2 on Saturday night.

Arizona State 6, Gonzaga 3: Colby Woodmansee had a tiebreaking double in the fourth inning, Zach Dixon struck out nine in eight solid innings and Arizona State beat Gonzaga in an elimination game in the NCAA Tournament’s Fort Worth Regional. The Sun Devils (36-22), who lost the regional opener to the Zags, advanced to face host and top-seeded TCU for the regional championship.

Texas Christian 8, Arizona State 1: TCU is going its sixth NCAA Super Regional after the Horned Frogs won over Arizona State to clinch an NCAA regional at home for the third year in a row. Frogs starter Brian Howard struck out nine without a walk in eight innings, and Cam Warner drove in three runs, including a two-run homer.

Louisiana Lafayette 10, Arizona 3: Stefan Trosclair hit a solo homer as part of a 2 for 3, three-RBI day and Louisiana Lafayette beat Arizona in the NCAA Tournament’s Lafayette Regional on Sunday. Kyle Clement and Brad Antchak both added a pair of hits as ULL victimized Arizona starter JC Cloney for six earned runs on seven hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings.

Arizona 6, Sam Houston State 5: Alfonso Rivas III went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and retired the final two Sam Houston State batters to help Arizona beat the Bearkats on Sunday night in an elimination game at the NCAA Tournament’s Lafayette Regional. The Wildcats (40-21) will face top-seeded Louisiana Lafayette on Monday.

South Alabama 7, Southern Mississippi 5: A six-run sixth inning allowed South Alabama to stay alive in the Tallahassee Regional as it ousted Southern Mississippi on Sunday. The Jaguars (42-21) trailed 4-0 going into the sixth before they rallied and took the lead. Cole Billingsley had the game-winning hit with a two-run single with two outs.

Florida State 18, South Alabama 6: The Seminoles hit six home runs, including two by Dylan Busby, as the routed the Jaguars to win the Tallahassee, Fla., Regional Jackson Lueck, Cal Raleigh, Tyler Holton and Hayden Kelly also homered for Florida State (40-20), which won its 36th regional title and are in a super regional for an NCAA-leading 15th time. South Alabama ends the season 42-22.

Williams & Mary 5, Virginia 4: Charles Ameer hit a tiebreaking home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and the fourth-seeded Tribe ended the Cavaliers’ defense of its national championship in the Charlottesville Regional.

East Carolina 8, William & Mary 4: Sam Lanier pitched five shutout innings in relief and East Carolina hit three home runs Sunday as East Carolina completed an unbeaten run through the Charlottesville regional and advanced to the super regional round for the fourth time in program history. Lanier (2-1) pitched three innings before a nearly 1 hour rain delay and two after, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts.

South Carolina 23, Rhode Island 2: The Gamecocks scored their most runs ever in an NCAA tournament game to stay alive in the Columbia, S.C., Regional while eliminating Rhode Island. TJ Hopkins had five RBIs, including a bases-loaded triple in the fifth. South Carolina must defeat UNC Wilmington twice, starting Sunday night, if it hopes to advance out of the Columbia Regional.

South Carolina 10, UNC Wilmington 1: South Carolina starter Tyler Johnson threw a five-hitter as the Gamecocks avoided NCAA Tournament elimination for a third straight game with a victory over UNC Wilmington on Sunday. The win sets up a final showdown for the Columbia Regional title between these teams Monday night. Johnson had not started a game in his career yet struck out a career high 11 in his first complete game.

Wright State 7, Ohio State 3: J.D. Orr went 3 for 4, Gabe Snyder homered and Wright State avoided elimination with a 7-3 victory over Ohio State on Sunday in the NCAA Tournament Louisville Regional. Caleb Sampen and Zane Collins combined to allow five hits and a walk as the third-seeded Raiders (46-16) reached Sunday’s regional final against top-seeded Louisville.

Louisville 3, Wright State 1: Nick Solak homered and knocked in all three Louisville runs, and left-hander Drew Harrington held Wright State to five hits over 7 1/3 innings as the top-seeded Cardinals clinched the Louisville Regional with a victory Sunday. The Cardinals advanced to their fourth straight Super Regional.

Georgia Tech 7, UConn 5: Ryan Peurifoy scored on a throwing error in the ninth inning, and the Yellow Jackets ousted the Huskies from the Gainesville, Fla., Regional Peurifoy doubled to start the ninth and then scored on a sacrifice bunt when UConn pitcher Patrick Ruotolo’s threw wildly to third. Tristin English added an RBI single for the Yellow Jackets (38-24).

Florida 10, Georgia Tech 1: Peter Alonso drove in three runs, Alex Faedo pitched eight scoreless innings and overall No. 1 seed Florida advanced in the NCAA Tournament by beating Georgia Tech Sunday night in the Gainesville Regional. The Gators will host in-state rival Florida State in a best-of-three super regional next weekend. Florida swept all three games against the Seminoles this season and has won 10 of the last 12 in the series.

Dallas Baptist 5, New Mexico 3: Matt Duce went 2 for 2 with a home run and two runs scored and Dallas Baptist edged New Mexico in an elimination game in the NCAA Tournament’s Lubbock Regional on Sunday. Six Dallas Baptist players had multi-hit games, with Trooper Reynolds leading the way with a 3-for-4 day with an RBI. DBU pounded out 15 hits, including a solo home run by Camden Duzenack.

Dallas Baptist 10, Texas Tech 6: Jameson Hannah drove in three runs and Justin Wall went 3 for 5 with two runs scored to help Dallas Baptist beat Texas Tech in the NCAA Tournament’s Lubbock Regional on Sunday night. The teams will play again Monday with the winner advancing to the super regionals.

Tulane 4, Utah 1: Jeremy Montalbano and Hunter Hope both hit homers in the fourth inning to help Tulane beat Utah in an elimination game of the NCAA tournament’s Oxford Regional on Sunday. Freshman Ross Massey threw eight impressive innings for Tulane, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out four.

Boston College 6, Tulane 3: Boston College scored three runs in the second inning and never trailed to beat Tulane in the NCAA tournament’s Oxford Regional championship game on Sunday night. The Eagles (34-20) completed a perfect regional with their third win in three days.

Rice 7, Southeastern Louisiana 2: Blake Fox gave up one earned run over six innings and the Owls busted open a close game late to knock off the Lions in the first round of the Baton Rouge Regional. Rice faces LSU on Sunday in the winner’s bracket. Southeastern Louisiana faces Utah Valley in an elimination game on Sunday.

Southeastern Louisiana 3, Utah Valley 2: Domenick Carlini pitched six strong innings to make a three-run first stand up and Southeastern Louisiana edged Utah Valley 3-2 in an elimination game in the NCAA Tournament’s Baton Rouge Regional on Sunday. Southeastern Louisiana will face Rice on Monday in another elimination game.

Louisiana State 4, Rice 2: Greg Deichmann hit an inside-the-park grand slam, and Alex Lange allowed just two runs over eight innings to help LSU beat Rice on Sunday night in a rain-delayed, elimination game at the NCAA Tournament’s Baton Rouge Regional. Top-seeded LSU (44-18) will play the winner of Monday’s Rice-Southeastern Louisiana game later in the day.

Coastal Carolina 4, North Carolina State 0: Coastal Carolina beat North Carolina State 4-0 on Sunday to advance to the championship round of the Raleigh Regional. The game was suspended in the ninth inning Saturday night due to heavy rain and lightning, and was resumed Sunday morning.

North Carolina State 17, Navy 1: NC State rolled to a fast start to beat Navy in an elimination game at the NCAA’s Raleigh Regional on Sunday. The top-seeded Wolfpack led 10-0 by the fourth inning to reach the championship round to face No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina.
