Arizona edges Mississippi State, 1-0, in super regional opener

Bobby Dalbec pitched a season-high 8 2/3 scoreless innings, Cameron Ming got the final out with two on and Arizona beat Mississippi State, 1-0, on Friday night in the Starkville, Miss., Super Regional opener.

Dalbec (10-4), drafted in the fourth round by the Boston Red Sox on Friday, threw 129 pitches in his fifth start of the season. He gave up only five hits and struck out nine for Arizona (43-21).

Ryan Gridley and John Holland singled to left field with two outs in the ninth to chase Dalbec. Ming struck out Jake Mangum for his second save of the season. Mississippi State (44-17-1) left 10 men on base.

Arizona designated hitter JJ Matijevic sliced a double to left field to score Ryan Aguilar from first in the sixth inning. In the bottom half, Dalbec struck out the side for his second straight 1-2-3 inning.

Dalbec needed just five pitches to retire the side in the seventh and he finished the eighth after a power outage caused a 37-minute delay.

Game 2 in the best-of-three series is Saturday. The series winner will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

In other super regional openers Friday:

Texas Christian 8, Texas A&M 2: Luken Baker hit his fifth home run in nine games, Jared Janczak went a career-best 7 2/3 innings, and the Hornes Frogs won the opening game of the College Station, Texas, Super Regional..

Baker gave TCU a 5-2 lead with his third-inning homer. He scored again in the fifth, advancing from second on a wild pitch, and Ryan Merrill’s double later in the inning scored two more.

The Horned Frogs (46-15) held on to move one win from a third straight College World Series berth. The No. 4 seed Aggies (48-15) were eliminated by TCU in last season’s super regional.

Miami 12, Boston College 7: Johnny Ruiz had two home runs for a career-high five RBIs, and Zack Collins drove in three runs to help the Hurricanes win at the Coral Gables, Fla., Super Regional.

Michael Mediavilla (11-1) struck out seven and gave up two earned runs in 72/3 innings for Miami (49-11). Bryan Garcia picked up his 17th save by striking out Donovan Casey with the bases loaded in the ninth.

East Carolina 8, Texas Tech 6: Travis Watkins hit two home runs and had six RBIs to lead the Pirates to their first super regional victory at Lubbock, Texas.

Evan Kruczynski (8-1) struck out six and gave up three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for East Carolina (38-21-1). Freshman Matt Bridges struck out six in 2 2/3 innings to pick up his second save.
