Poll: Did World Series umpires make right call at end of Game 3?

It appears we have another baseball controversy.

Game 3 of the World Series on Saturday night was decided on a controversial call which allowed the St. Louis Cardinals to plate the winning run in the ninth inning of a 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Third base umpire James Joyce (of Armando Galaraga’s would-be perfect game fame) ruled that Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks obstructed with Cardinals baserunner Allen Craig following an errant throw by catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The call allowed Craig to score the winning run, much to the ire of Boston Manager John Farrell and every Red Sox fan in the world.

Joyce claimed the call was made after Middlebrooks put his feet into the air after the bad throw, thereby obstructing Craig’s ability to run home on the play.

Farrell said he couldn’t understand how Middlebrooks was expected to get out the way when he’s lying on the ground after making a play, calling it a “tough pill to swallow.”
