Never has an NFL player rushed for 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons, but Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson is certainly off on the right foot.

The Vikings star and reigning NFL most valuable player tore off a 78-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage at Detroit.

Peterson came nine yards short last season of surpassing the NFL’s single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, set by the Los Angeles Rams’ Eric Dickerson in 1984.

Peterson has said he thinks he can get 2,500 yards this season. If he plays the way he has so far Sunday, he just might be right.
