Matt Klentak leaving Angels to become Phillies’ general manager

The Angels lost their second assistant general manager in as many days on Saturday. Matt Klentak will be named general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, according to a person familiar with the hiring but not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Scott Servais, who spent four years as an Angels assistant GM in charge of scouting and player development, was named new manager of the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

Klentak, 34, spent four years with the Angels after being hired by former GM Jerry Dipoto in November 2011, and he handled many of the day-to-day operations of the club after Dipoto resigned on July 1 and Bill Stoneman took over as interim GM.

The Dartmouth graduate previously spent four years as director of baseball operations in Baltimore, where he was involved in scouting, player development and contract negotiations.

Klentak was hired for the Orioles by Andy MacPhail, who was the team’s president of baseball operations but is now the Phillies’ team president. Speculation that Klentak would replace Ruben Amaro, who was fired as Phillies GM after the season, began last summer.

Prior to his Orioles tenure, Klentak spent four years working in Major League Baseball’s labor relations department, where he was a primary contact for club personnel with respect to the interpretation of baseball rules, the collective bargaining agreement and other industry practices.

He began his front-office career in Colorado, where he worked in the baseball operations department in 2003.

New Angels General Manager Billy Eppler said he is “having continuous discussions with candidates to join our front office, and we’ll see how the pieces eventually fit to what we’re trying to accomplish.”
