Anita DeFrantz elected to IOC executive board

The International Olympic Committee elected Anita DeFrantz, a member from Los Angeles, to its powerful executive board.

The announcement on Tuesday afternoon ended a big day for Americans at the IOC session in Buenos Aires.

Earlier, U.S. Olympic Committee Chairman Larry Probst was elected an IOC member. DeFrantz’s victory confirmed an end to difficult relations between the U.S. and the Olympic movement.

“There were some hard feelings,” DeFrantz said earlier in the week. “It has been a barrier.”

The rift centered on a disagreement over how to share revenue from American broadcasters and sponsors. The U.S. and IOC recently decided on a new deal and everyone seems content, judging by Thursday’s developments.

With Americans assuming positions of authority in the IOC, U.S. cities could stand a better chance when bidding to host future Games. Los Angeles has expressed interest in the 2024 Summer Olympics.
