Brian Hoyer gives Browns fans reason to cheer ... at least for a week

Share

Brian Hoyer has saved the Cleveland Browns!

Making just the second start of his five-year NFL career, Hoyer showed in one game that there’s really no need to be stockpiling draft picks in order to find the quarterback of the future next April -- he’s already here.

The former Michigan State quarterback who has already played for three NFL teams completed 30 of 54 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns -- including one to Jordan Cameron with 51 seconds remaining to give the Browns their first win of the season, 31-27 over the Minnesota Vikings.

Hoyer also made others in the Browns organization look pretty good too. First-year Coach Rob Chudzinski really knew what he was doing when plucked Hoyer from the No. 3 spot on the depth chart and plopped into the starting position in place of the injured Brandon Weeden.

Same goes for the front office, which made the surprise move of trading top running back and No. 3 overall pick from just a year ago Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for their 2014 first-round pick in the middle of the week.

Who needs a running game when you’ve got the unstoppable Hoyer slinging the ball?

I probably should mention that Hoyer also threw three interceptions. And that all of this came against a team that has yet to win a game this season.

OK, fine, so I got a bit carried away. Maybe it’s a little premature to declare Hoyer the savior of the Browns.

But he did help save them from going 0-3. That’s gotta count for something.
