Brian Hoyer wants to be the starter in Cleveland ... or somewhere else

Things might be working out a little too well for the Cleveland Browns so far this season.

The usually terrible Browns are off to a promising 3-2 start, thanks in no small part to starting quarterback Brian Hoyer and with no on-field contributions from hotshot rookie QB Johnny Manziel.

And that’s kind of where the problem arises. The 29-year-old Hoyer, who has thrown for 1,224 yards with seven touchdowns and only one interception this season, is a free agent after this season.

“I don’t think I need to say any more than I’m from Cleveland and this is where I want to be,” Hoyer told reporters Sunday after the Browns’ 31-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. “But I also am a competitor, so I want to be somewhere where I’m playing.’’

Obviously the Browns want him back, and Hoyer would love to stay with his hometown team. But he also wants job security.

And Hoyer has played well enough this year that he surely has piqued the interest of other teams that don’t have a Heisman Trophy-winning superstar waiting in the wings.

Jason Cole of Bleacher Report went as far as to say last week that Hoyer would not re-sign with the Browns as long as Manziel was still around. When pressed by reporters on the topic Sunday, Hoyer repeatedly refused to answer the question.

But his statement that he’s committed to being a starter might say enough.

At the very least it presents a problem for the Browns, who seem to be trying to convince Hoyer to stay while also remaining committed to Manziel as their quarterback of the future.
