SAN DIEGO -- James Stewart raced to his first AMA Supercross victory of the season Saturday night, holding off three-time defending series champion Ryan Villopoto at Qualcomm Stadium.

Stewart, the Yoshimura Suzuki rider from Haines City, Fla., has 46 career victories.

“It is always special to win, but especially this season,” Stewart said. “Tonight was our military-themed race, and everyone here was one big family. This was an amazing race, and I look forward to heading to Cowboys Stadium next weekend.”

Ken Roczen was third, Ryan Dungey fourth and Weston Peick fifth.

Villopoto leads the series standings after six races, nine points ahead of Roczen. Stewart is fourth, 21 points back.

Earlier, Kawasaki’s Justin Hill, from Yoncalla, Ore., raced to his first Western Regional 250 class victory.

“What an amazing feeling to get a win,” Hill said. “I had a lot more confidence after getting on the podium in Oakland and I was able to stay focused. I was so focused I missed the white flag, so when I got the checkered I kept charging thinking there was one more lap. This is just so awesome.”

Series leader Jason Anderson was second. Anderson has a four-point lead over Cole Seely. Hill is third, 24 points behind.
