Bubba Watson is a three-sport man at Travelers Championship
This has been a good week of golf for Bubba Watson, who tees off midday Saturday with a two-stroke lead in the Travelers Championship.
But with the PGA Tour in Connecticut, Watson has found himself talking about other sports the last few days.
The 2012 Masters champion was scheduled to throw out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. Rain delayed the game, robbing him of his chance. Still, reporters asked if he had been nervous about his big moment.
“I played baseball a little bit,” he said. “I can get it from the mound to home plate.”
In fact, Watson played baseball for 15 years growing up.
“My dad wanted me to be a left-handed pitcher, wanted me to play for the Yankees one day, but I chose golf instead of baseball,” he said. “He was upset for a couple of months, but then he got over it when I won for the first time.”
The media also asked him about his friend, Tim Tebow, getting a chance to play with the New England Patriots. Watson talked about Tebow’s character and competitiveness.
“They’re looking at what he can do for the team,” Watson said. “Obviously he’s got the drive to play any position. If he wanted to kick field goals, he probably could. He’d figure out a way to do it. “
Watson stood at 10-under going into the third round. A pack of golfers -- including Hunter Mahan and Charley Hoffman -- trailed him at 8-under. Padraig Harrington was at 7-under through two holes on Saturday.
