Watch aftermath of Buster Posey’s liner hitting Roberto Kelly

Did you wonder where San Francisco Giants first-base coach Roberto Kelly was during Game 1 of the NL Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals? He was recovering from a line drive to the head by Giants catcher Buster Posey during batting practice.

Kelly sustained a concussion Saturday after getting hit in the back of the head while standing near second base.

As you can see in the video above, Kelly walked off the field with assistance. He was taken to a San Francisco hospital where he was diagnosed with a concussion.

“I saw him on the ground like everybody else, I didn’t see it hit him,” Posey said. “Any time somebody gets hit in the head you’re worried for them. He seemed to be doing all right. He was cognizant and answering questions. I think any time with a head injury it is scary because you just can’t take anything for granted with that, and you have to be really, really careful.”

Kelly has been the Giants’ first-base coach since 2008. He played 14 seasons in the majors for eight teams, including a brief stint with the Dodgers.

Kelly will also miss Game 2 but is expected back for Game 3 when the series shifts to St. Louis.

“I don’t see him being out there at least these two games, if not longer,” Manager Bruce Bochy said before Game 1 on Sunday. “He’s at home, he’s resting well [but] he didn’t sleep much last night. He hasn’t come in yet. Dave Groeschner, our trainer, and I were hoping he could come in so they could check him out again.”

Kelly was replaced by Joe Lefebvre as first-base coach.

“Joe, he’s got some experience,” Bochy said. “He’s been coaching in the big leagues. He’s been here all year.”
