ST. LOUIS — This is the fourth time the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox have met in the World Series. The Cardinals won the first meeting, in 1946, on the "Mad Dash" from first base to home plate by Hall of Fame outfielder Enos Slaughter.
Slaughter is one of 10 St. Louis baseball greats immortalized with statues in front of Busch Stadium. On Saturday, before the Cardinals and Red Sox played there for the first time in this World Series, a wreath of red and white flowers appeared on a display stand behind Slaughter's statue.
The card attached to the wreath read thusly:
"From The Enos Slaughter Family
"Roxboro North Carolina
"Sending Our Love To The Cardinals And Their Fans!!"
Slaughter died in 2002.
