Tony Gonzalez in, Marino and Sharpe out on CBS’ ‘The NFL Today’

CBS is trading two Pro Football Hall of Famers for a recently retired player who is sure to join them in Canton, Ohio, just as soon as he is eligible.

Tony Gonzalez will be joining CBS’ pregame show, “The NFL Today,” replacing longtime analysts Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe, the network announced Tuesday.

Gonzalez is a 14-time Pro Bowler who played 12 years with the Kansas City Chiefs and the last five with the Atlanta Falcons. He is the league’s second all-time leading receiver with 1,325 catches and is fifth in receiving yards (15,127) and sixth in receiving touchdowns (111).

“Having just stepped off the playing field, Tony brings a fresh and insightful perspective,” CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said in a statement. “As a future Hall of Famer, we are excited for him to share his knowledge, experiences and opinions with our viewers. Tony was one of the most respected and hard-working players in the NFL and a tremendous teammate.

“We look forward to him bringing these attributes to CBS Sports.”

Marino has been on the show for 13 years, Sharpe for 10.

“We want to acknowledge Dan Marino and Shannon Sharpe who have contributed greatly to the success of ‘The NFL Today’ for more than a decade,” McManus said. “Dan and Shannon are true Hall of Famers on the field and in front of the camera. As they pursue other professional opportunities, we thank them for their hard work and dedication and wish them nothing but the best.”
