Notre Dame and Alabama, two pillars of college football tradition, woke up Sunday on top of the college football world.

Weekend upsets of Kansas State and Oregon, the Bowl Championship Series’ Nos. 1 and 2 teams, respectively, pushed Notre Dame to No. 1 in the major polls. The undefeated Irish are also expected to be No. 1 when the latest BCS standings are released Sunday evening.

Notre Dame is No. 1 in the AP poll followed by Alabama. Georgia is third, followed by Ohio State, Oregon, Florida, Kansas State, Louisiana State, Texas A&M; and Florida State.

Ohio State is ineligible for the BCS title because of NCAA sanctions but could be crowned AP champions. USC, ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP poll, fell out of the rankings after losing to UCLA, 38-28, on Saturday. The Bruins moved up two spots to No. 15.

Notre Dame and Alabama are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the AP poll for the first time since 1967. Notre Dame received all 60 first-place votes and is No. 1 by AP for the first time since 1993.

The USA Today coaches poll also has Notre Dame and Alabama on top, followed by Georgia, Oregon, Florida State, Florida, LSU, Kansas State, Clemson and Texas A&M.;

Notre Dame can clinch a spot in the BCS title game with a win at USC on Saturday while Alabama will earn a bid if it beats Auburn next week and Georgia in the SEC title game.
