Search continues for former D-II champion QB Cullen Finnerty

The quarterback who led Grand Valley State to three Division II national titles has gone missing after possibly having “some kind of mental episode,” a law enforcement official said Tuesday.

Cullen Finnerty, 30, may have run into the woods while on a fishing trip near Baldwin, Mich., about 65 miles north of Grand Rapids. According to Lake County Sheriff Robert Hilts, Finnerty’s family told investigators that the former football star “was nervous about something and it was suspected that he might be having some kind of a mental episode.”

Finnerty, who was briefly a member of the Baltimore Ravens, was reported missing Sunday night. Authorities tracked his cellphone until it went dead, Hilts said, and searchers have found the small pontoon boat Finnerty was using to fish.

The episode has touched the Grand Valley State community. A group of football players, staff and others headed north in a bus Tuesday morning to join the search, with dozens of former players and coaches making the trip as well.

Athletic department spokesman Tim Nott said Tuesday the group will help look for Finnerty “until he is found … or the sun goes down.”
