DeMarcus Cousins’ April Fools’ joke has everything but the timing

Share

DeMarcus Cousins has never worried about getting too technical.

The temperamental Sacramento Kings center devised what could have been the perfect April Fools’ joke, retweeting a cover picture of his debut R&B album “Misunderstood” under the stage name—how cool is this?—Boogie Smooth. The album was set to include the single “Emotional” with Chance The Rapper.

Everything seemed perfectly plausible for someone who leads the NBA with 15 technical fouls and doesn’t like to schmooze after games with the Clippers.

Only one problem: Cousins retweeted the cover photo on Sunday, two days before April 1.

“Lets [sic] be honest,” Cousins tweeted Monday, “we all know I cant do any worse than @shaq @realchriswebber.” Cousins was referring to Shaquille O’Neal and Chris Webber, former NBA stars who made brief forays into music.

By Tuesday, Cousins directed his Twitter followers to his website, demarcuscousins.com, where they could find a video of Boogie Smooth … banging on the piano like a 3-year-old.

Count Sacramento Coach Mike Malone among those relieved that the musical venture wasn’t real.

“I was hoping that it wasn’t true because I don’t know if anybody would even buy that album,” Malone told the Sacramento Bee. “I guess April Fools’ came a few days early, but DeMarcus keeps everybody on the edge of their seat.”
