Are Eagles making a statement by leaving ‘Redskins’ off media guide cover?

Philadelphia is playing Washington this weekend.

The two NFL teams. But you probably already knew that’s what I meant.

No need to waste time with pesky nicknames -- especially when one of them is considered to be offensive by some groups of people.

The Eagles left their nickname and that of the Redskins off the cover of the media guide for this week’s game, referring to the teams only by the cities they represent.

This seems to be a departure from the way the organization’s weekly publication is usually presented.

A photo of three recent Eagles media guides tweeted out by Matt Lombardo, who covers Philadelphia sports for NJ Advance Media, shows “Eagles vs. Falcons” for the Sept. 14 game and “Eagles vs. Jets” for the Sept. 27 game but “Philadelphia vs. Washington” for Sunday’s game.

Could be just a matter of someone different handling the media guide production this week or something like that. Or someone could be trying to make a statement.

The Washington Post also pointed out that Eagles Coach Chip Kelly never used the word “Redskins” during a 12-minute news conference Wednesday but spoke about that team extensively.

Once again, could just be the way he normally talks. Or it could be something more.

It’s worth noting that the Redskins’ logo, also considered by some to be offensive to Native Americans, does appear on the cover of the media guide. But it’s also worth noting that conspiracy theories are fun.
